Tomika Ubi service sucks!  Posted on 05-Oct-2020

I just want to share with my experience at Tomika Aircon service at Ubi Road
On Saturday 3 Oct 2020, when start my van in the morning found some foul smell in the cabin and the air con was blowing hot air. Naturally I though there is something wrong with the air con and I had not top up any aircon gas since 2 years back. My van had a back air con blower and installed by Tomika so I though it will be good to go back to them for check and servicing
Call them up and all things go well and I brought the van to them in the morning at 11am. There were 3 guys there in the shop when I visited them. 1 old guy, 1 guy that does not speak Chinese only English but look like a Chinese and 1 malaysian/Singapore guy. They Malaysia/Singaporean guy listen to my complain and he said that the aircon coil may be broken and need to check. I told them ok if the cost is more than $200 call me back so that I know and can decide whether to replace or not. Then I left the van in their shop and I went home to do other stuff.
Then by 230pm, there is still no phone call from them. I know there is no car that they need to repair as I saw no car park inside their workshop. Then at 3:20 pm they call and say the air con coil need to replace and filter is very dirty also need to replace
Aircon coil $320
Filter $80
GST 20

I was thinking so expense, and I just change the filter 3 mths back on my regular servicing, now why need to change. I told them that do not change the filter just change the aircon coil. They grumble a bit and ask me to look at how dirty the filter when I come down to collect the van.
I was thinking the same hard sell tactic for workshop to convince you to change filter. When I was there, they change the story and say the original is missing and no change need to replace it with a new filter. I was really angry at that time. But due to the fact I still need the van to run some jobs and it is already 4pm on a Saturday, no choice lan lan paid the $420 and left the place very very angry.
If any of you guys need to send their air con for service please be aware of the company

My Chevy Optra has been giving me periodic problems since 6 months ago. The air/wind blower strength would turn itself Low when temperature hits to a certain degree of coldness and that will make the cabin feel hot, bad especially during Long drives along the NSHWY. And one and off the aircon will give off a foul musky smell if my car remains stationery for 1-2 days. Have tried various ways and anti-bacteria silver ion spray, turning blower to max with hot air but the smell would just go away and be back in a few days. Went to Tomika Bukit Merah last week and Mr Ong asked me to leave my car there for 3-4 hours to fix. He say would change my car filter and install a new thermostat to fix the lower prob as coil was freezing up with ice. Was worried it would cost more but was quoted a reasonable amount and he had it fixed in 3 hours. Service was good, fast and Fuss-Free!!!

A week and a half ago, my Citroen Grand Picasso's aircon started to act up - level of coldness decreased and after reading some reviews, decided to send my car to Tomika.

Tomika's mechanic hooked up to some meter and immediately deduced that my compressor was failing and needed to change. I told him that my compressor was just changed two/three years back. I believed him and I was quoted $800 for the change.

Aircon was cold after I collected it at the end of the same day. Fast forward five days later, with very little driving of the car in between, level of coldness started to drop again. And seven days on, aircon was blowing warm air. Because it was the weekend, couldn't send the car back to Tomika.

Took the car back to Tomika first thing this morning and first thing I was told that the guy who fixed my car is on leave for a week so don't know why compressor was changed. They hooked up my car and said there's a gas leak and no aircon gas is left in the system. I challenged them that the maybe it was a leak in the first place and changing the compressor was not necessary - to this, the mechanic said he's not sure as it was done by the other guy who's not around!

I picked up the car at the end of the day and Wesley, the boss/manager explained that an O-ring was not replaced and because the new compressor created high pressure, the joint where the old O-ring was blew a leak. I was sceptical. He said there wouldnt be any charges today out of goodwill. Then Wesley pointed out to me that there was a leak in my radiator and asked me to go see my mechanic. This was at a joint connecting the coolant reservoir to the radiator. Funny thing is I just got this part replaced two months ago.

I immediately sent my car to my mechanic and the first thing my mechanic said was that the aircon workshop probably yanked the radiator without unclipping this tube, and caused it to break. I am convinced Tomika's mechanic broke the tube. I asked Wesley and he duly denied. I had to pay another $80 for the tube.

The second trip caused me additional time, taxi trips to send and pick up car and an additional trip to my mechanic to fix a radiator tube that Tomika probably broke.

I wouldn't ever go back to Tomika again and would urge everyone to caution - and just avoid.

Recently recommended a friend there cos his air con stopped blowing cold air after lunch at Ubi area a few months ago. Technician did not even check for leaks and said that his cooling coil was leaking very badly and quoted $900 to change the cooling coil. How can it be leaking badly when he has never topped up gas before during his 2 years of ownership? I asked him to top up gas and monitor first before going to another shop for a second opinion. He went to MarkCool and was quoted $100+ for an expansion valve which solved the problem until today.

My car aircon had a aircon gas leak, sent in to Tomika and they checked and claimed it's one of the aircon pipe leak.

After asking on the price and stuff, I agreed to repair.

After repair, I picked up the car and drove home without issue (my home was near to Alexandra - around 2-3km).

The same night I drove out to meet my friend, I stopped around Tanglin Halt area waiting for traffic light to turn green.

When I about to move off, my clutch suddenly sinked in and unable to recover back. I opened up my bonnet and to my horror, all the clutch fluid was leaked exactly the same area where they repair the aircon pipe. I had to ask for towing service to tow to my workshop for repair (which i had to wait for the other morning for it to repair).

I decided to give them a call the other morning, the supervisor after hearing my story was rude and talk really loud to me. And he actually want to push the blame to my car age instead of trying to verify the issue here.

No point arguing and I just hung up the phone. Really disappointed by their service. I am also suspecting that they are asking a junior mechanic to repair so called a simple job. Lesson learned and this is going to be my last visit.

Googled and found them to be one of the more popular auto aircon shop besides Markcool. They specialise in auto aircon and nothing else unlike some other aircon shops which sells rims, tyres, audio, alarm, etc. Been going to the Ubi branch as I find they are good at troubleshooting/solving aircon problems, charge reasonably and finish the job quickly if the shop is not too crowded, of course.
Feedback: Your workers should try to be more careful when removing panels and parts from the car to do the repair. Found some new scratches when I reached home and if my car were a new car, I would surely be pissed!

My experience with Tomika was not very pleasant. I went down to change air con cooling coil and it cost more than 1k. After few days of driving, there are sound coming out from the aircon unit which is very irritating, so went back to Tomika and was told that sound is coming from Air con blower motor which another cost about $600 plus to repair. I am not expert in Car aircon system, but what are the chance of other parts failure right after repair by Tomika? Best part is Tomika, told me that if i dont want to spend $600 to repair, i can just increase my sound system volume. This is my experience for your own risk assessment before visiting above mentioned workshop, i would never what do go though them again.

Visited them when they were all busy, but they perform a very detailed check on my a/c system and was advised to return on appointment basis as their hands are full for the day. Good job.
