Kia Cerato Forte 1.6 SX Review
12 Mar 2009  |  Kia Reviews
Kia's latest addition to the market segment seems like one to watch out for. It might just be the one to push the boundaries of the entry-level market segment.

After looking at the few 1.6 in the market, finally i made my decision on the 1.6L Cerato Forte SX(A)after testing driving it...
It feels good and comfortable interior or exterior..
I get the many features that come along with it..
But not all things are that good eventually....there are still some minor problems though
-Pick up is not that good (especially up the slope)
-The tyres are a bit noisy (will change once wear)
other than that...its good
Its quite stable when driving on North south highway while going to m'sia...i tried to about 170km/h , as compared to others...

What I like
Nice interior
Audio system is good
Good climate control
nice boot space
nice leg space as well..

What I do not like
FC not as good..about 11.8km/l
No power when going up slope
Other than that is ok...

If you're looking for a cheap car that looks stylish, reliable, comfortable, spacious and drives fine, this is the car for you. When I first saw this car, I just couldn't keep my eyes off it no matter which angle I look at it. So i bought a Kia SX1.6(A) recently and it didn't disappoint me.

The styling is as best as it can get, if you're still unsatisfied, get the body kit. it looks really fierce, especially in white.

Driving wise is acceptable, not the best in terms of pickup but definitely good enough for Singapore roads.

Much has been said about the looks of this car, but this car is not just a bimbo. It's comfortable and spacious, and there's plenty of room at the boot. you can even lower down the back seats to put gigantic items that you've bought from ikea.

This car is a complete package. Much better than other cars in the same category such as Avante and Vios. Especially if you compare the price.

I would recommend first time car buyer to get this car, it's affordable, yet don't look cheap like those hatchbacks and and most importantly it is stylish.

If you have more cash to spare and prefer cars with better performance, this car is definitely not good enough for you. But then again, you shouldn't be looking at cars in this category.

What I like
stylish looks, especially with body kit and in white
comfort and spacious seats
spacious boots that can store big things
handling is great

most importantly, value for money

What I do not like
the initial pickup, but you get what you pay for.

Used to ride 2 vios (old & new model), thought I was getting a bang for my hard earn money till I purchase my Kia Cerato Forte SX1.6A after my second visit to the showroom. The moment I saw it was luv at first sight. The interior was nicely done(for the price) & comfort was excellent, u just want to keep on driving it, normally you would feel that a car just brings you from one place to another literally speaking but not with this car. The engine is smooth & quiet, power is ok not great but ok. Styling of cause is A1.Loads of features for such pricing(got my before the great COE leap though. So far no negative feedbacks but all positive. Considering the price, I say is a great car for any one considering to purchase one.

What I like
Styling, comfort, engine, features.

What I do not like
Steering might be a tad heavy especially perhaps for the female drivers.

I wasn't an owner of Cerato. But before I changed my ride to Avante 8 months back, I seriously considered the Forte for my replacement. Back then, why I didn't choose the Forte was because of the interior all made up of hard plastics, which gave an impression of cheap build. Still I decided to compromised that, and went for a test drive to feel the car.

I'm one who is very particular about insulation, and sadly, Forte didn't score well here, even though it is considerably much better than Vios. So I gave it a miss and chose Avante...

Just two days ago, I happened to pop by C&C and took a look at the Forte once again. To my surprise, this car has improved alot!! The dashboard are soft touch, the doors armrest are soft touch and where used to be just plain hard plastic on the door panel, has been inserted with fabric or leather materials.

Even though I didn't went for a test drive to check if there is any improvement in the insulation, the newer batch of Forte has nevertheless impress me alot. Though KIA and Hyundai are sisters company, but in Singapore, the competition between the Forte and Avante is indeed becoming a very tough fight. Well done KIA for improving the Forte!!

What I like
The interior of newer batch of Forte... Such as soft touch materials to dashboard, door armrest and fabric/ leather inserts to door panels...

As usual, the features on Forte, great styling...

What I do not like
Not so solid door closing sound...

Insulation against engine noise, though is acceptable, it's still quite intrusive compared to it's sister Avante...

I've heard so much about this car since it launched. Went to the showroom and saw a car with the interior filled up with cheap plastic parts (some of them even have flashes at the parting line for god sake!).

Was then told the newer batch will have better interior quality. Didn't really bother much, until a colleague of mine bought this car. He collected the car in Jan, a 1.6SX version. Yes the dashboard has better plastic now, but other compartment are still the same (flashes on parting line spotted!).

Colleague let me try out the car, so we went out for lunch with me driving his new ride, from bugis to old airport road makan place. Handling was acceptable though not too responsive. What I hate is the steering, it's too light. But colleague said it can be adjusted, so fine.

However, right before CNY the windscreen cracked! Windscreen cracked in less than a month?! Colleague said that he has checked some forum and it's a norm! C&C even issued a memo stating that they will change the windscreen even beyond warranty period! What is this?!

What I like
Exterior (Front & rims only)

What I do not like
Steering
Interior cheap plastic and design
Exterior (Rear)
Unreliable windscreen

I tested out a few cars prior to selecting this as my first family car. The Avante's FC was way better than this but the steering was too light for my liking. Moreover, the car model/design is already > 3 years. The Swift was too small and lack comfort for my family. The Fit does not have enough boot space although the FC is really good and comfort was surprisingly good as well. The Cruze was slightly more spacious but pick up is horrible. The Vios lack comfort, boot space and the interior design is bad... the only plus point was its pick up (Better than the rest). Therefore, I chose the Forte, it has a reasonable amount of boot space, interior design isnt the best but acceptable. Exterior design was good but after adding the body kit, it looks great. FC is poorer than Avante and Fit but at an avg of 11.8km/l, I am still ok with it...

What I like
Boot Space, Comfort, Exterior Design, Pricing.

What I do not like
Pick up, FC could be slightly better, interior design can be better.

I have just booked my Forte SX last 6 days from Ubi showroom. My SE is very reliable; gave freebies & updated me right on the day the COE bidding was closed.

Went down 2 days later to make my first payment & balance insurance. My SE was assuring that he will only register 2-3 days before collection.

As there was stock, now am waiting for my collection date on beginning Feb.

What I like
- Nice features for SX
- Great service from SE
- Freebies obtained
- Nice test drive service from SE
- Nice color chosen; Santorini Blue
- Everything lah easier said..

What I do not like
- I initially wanted to also fix BK but after reading a lot of reviews about it, decided not to. Heard that the BK for Forte's rear could not fit in properly.. Sobz. Maybe will go around to see for better quality in the future. Sobs :(

I been driving my EX manual around for two months now. Apart from the basic specs that are attached like foldable rear mirrors, integrated audio with usb slot for MP3, audio control on the steering wheel, all these has definitely made driving more luxurious. Fuel Consumption is approx 13-15 km/l for a 30% urban and 70% highway if there is no constant ramming of the accelerator. I chosed the EX manual version for two apparent reasons, firstly, it has a lighter gearbox which do no contribute to the existing heavy car weight, the forte is a big car for 1.6 litre, it's body is only 5cm slightly shorter than the toyota WISH, which gives better mileage. Secondly, the EX uses the standard 15" wheel which again, produces less drag and eases on the fuel consumption. Again, if rising fuel prices is no prob for some, the SX is a more sporty version.

What I like
Most of it.

What I do not like
The car is too big for this capacity. Can be better if it is lighter for Singapore roads with TONS of traffic junctions.

From the first time the car came out I have always been wanting to get one since the beginning of last year. The only thing is that need financing for the car. But after a wait for almost a year I've finally bought the car and really loving it. Though the waiting time is super super super long due to long queues at LTA after the 2010 new year.

After getting to drive the car, I find that there are some flaws to it which every cars has. The main concern is the engine but maybe cos have really fully run in the car and that's why cannot fully utilise the engine power. But one thing which I find a trouble is that when I am going up slope, I find that sometimes the engine will up gear, nope you nv see wrongly, up gear. The car will suddenly lose power and I have to engage steptronic to pull the car up.

Another thing is that the stock tires are really noisy. After they bald off, I'm going for comfort tires.

Something which I like is the air con and sound system. The air con is super highly efficient which sometimes i find too over power. But i like.. Next is the sound system, super fun at night blasting my way home on the PIE to prevent me from falling asleep. I also love the steering, not too heavy and not too light for me not to feel the feedback of the car.

I bought the car is because of the features and the Interior design. I find that driving the car most importantly is the Interior design must be good as driver we will mostly be camping inside. Features wise i really love it and have no complains.

Now the only thing I need to do is to put body kit or the car will look like a typical family sedan.

For me the lucky thing is that my SE is really good. She explains to me every single detail on the document, every single function of the car and also smoothly inform us of any details prior to purchasing of vehicle. All i can say, good.

What I like
1. Sound System
2. Steering Feeling
3. Air-Con
4. Smoothness of car
5. Some expensive touches of the car
6. E-start and keyless entry (Super cool)

What I do not like
Engine not too responsive. But maybe after 1 or 2 years will start putting after market parts (voltage stabalisers, K&N air filter, etc). But for now, juz leave it as stock car.

Cool down, mates for those having bad showroom experiences and you cannot really "blame" those salesperson because being able to earn more than most of us (buyers) with normally a entry "O" level cert for most salesperson.

1) How a showroom works?
- Salesman work on alternate days throughout the month or shifts such as work 1 day off 2-3 days.
- During thir off days, they are not allowed to serve any walk-in customers even if they are standing near the counter.
- First come first serve basis for salesman clocking system. In other words, the 1st walk-in customer will be served by the 1st salesman who clocked in to start their shift
- If any salesman meet any "lookers" who waste salesman time trying all cars at all showroom during the weekends with their wife/girlfriend, they normally do not walk over to serve or have their "chance" wasted.
- So normally, they will wait till buyers go to counter and ask for price list and ask few questions to get some attention from the salesman. Questions must be "smart" enough to indicate that you are not just window shopping and seriously looking for a car that day.
- Over the time, salesperson learn to read body lanaguages to gauge if the walk-in customer is a genuine buyer or a window shopper.
- Another way is also the car you drive to the showroom. If you drive a car where the salesman know that there is no way to sell your car, they will not even bother to serve you even if you are genuinely buying a 2nd car for your wife.

In short, you cant really blame these salesman who earn a miserable less than $750 basic pay monthly. The rest are all commission.

To make it worst, if you are buying a car which is selling by itself, you must be bringing a cheque book, waiting that cheque to the salesman next in line to serve you before you get any attention.

Yes, sad thing. If you want to test drive, test drive your friend's car first because they are going for volume.

In summary, stay cool and thats the way it is if you are buying your favorite car.

What I like
exterior is sleek
cheap price compared to jap

What I do not like
plastic interior. looks very commerical vehicle lookalike interior

Great exterior. Looks sporty in and out. The car comes good for its price. It comes with auto headlight function, climate control aircon, 17" Rims, side view mirror indicators and more. The seats are comfortable to sit on. Koreans are coming in hard against the Japanese and Continental cars. Test drive the car to feel it. The interior is not up to exterior feel. Complicated audio system in my opinion. If you want a sedan with features get it. 1.6 Engine responsive and quiet. What can I say more.

What I like
The sporty exterior.
Features.
Cool aircon.
Good price.

What I do not like
The bad dealership from C&C.

Collected a month ago 1.6SX(A). Order placed in Aug, collected in Sept.

So far everything seems fine apart from the "windscreen crack" issue. Got it replaced immediately (2 days plus installation of RikeCool and 1k servicing).

For the price tag, it's certainly the most (if not one of the best) value for money car that you can find.

Our Kimchi counterparts are definitely moving forward. The technology is more advanced than Sushi. In terms of stability of the technology, I can't comment much as it's still new.

So far, I'm one happy owner.

Other rides under consideration before I made my decision:
- Avante
- Cruze
- City
- Altis
- Allion
- Axio

What I like
- Exterior and interior look
- Latest technology for a fraction of the price
- Auto dim back mirror
- Ipod and AUX input
- Reverse cam
- Red lining leather seats
- Steering control

What I do not like
- Comes with "silent" alarm (can you even call this alarm?)
- GPS software (not that smart). Should consider other providers
- Pick up a bit slow but bearable
- Sound insulation
