Honda Civic 1.6 (A) Review
06 Mar 2012  |  Honda Reviews
The ninth-gen Civic rides the tide change by adopting eco-biased features, packing more substance into a relatively smaller package, with a conservative outlook.

I must first say that I have driven my Honda Civic 1.8L since 2006. This is my first review of the car and I think I ought to do it because I will be trading this car for a new car soon!
I started driving a 1.0L, then a 1.3L and then a 1.6L before this car. While there are few gadgets in this car (audio buttons on the steering wheel) as the technology then was not prevalent, it does give a sporty look and feel. I have absolutely no problems with its reliability. It has served me faithfully throughout the years and truth be told, I am a little dreadful about the day when we part.

What I like
- Reliability. No major problem.
- Responsiveness. Very eager to get going. To date, I have not depressed fully on the accelerator unlike my previous cars.
- Paddle shift
- Audio system. Though not the audiophile standard, it has given my listening pleasure.
- Spacious rear seats with flat floor.
- Relatively cheap then

What I do not like
- Undercarriage and wheel noise

The Honda Civic. A brand synonymous with any car crazed teenager dying to get a feel for the boy racer life style. With a line of legendary track monsters behind it Honda must have had their work cut out for them when designing the current Civic. It has been all good and smooth sailing till now. It is just a tad disappointing to see those flaring lines that portray a sleeping beast disappear. Honda made history with the last design. A car aimed at the future and a design that just never felt old. Updating what was already futuristic must have been difficult but I must add, this time it is a letdown.

When I saw the latest design, something in me told me, this is no more the car that every teenager wanted to own. It looks like a golfer’s car and that is the ultimate insult one can throw at any car. It feels old and matured something that a civic should never feel like.

So on a nice sunny Saturday I decided to head down to test drive this car to see if it lives up to its name. New design alright, it feels like a boxy version of the previous model. Open the door and what waits inside is another disappointment. The dashboard looks similar to the previous model and the only way to tell it apart is by the slightly more harder lines that feels like it was designed by someone who got too familiar with a e-class (more apparent in the accord model where the dash board looks like that of the e-class). One would be forgiven for expecting electric seats, sun roof and a 2.0litre model but Honda stands firm on a single 1.6litre unit with none of the said luxuries. The new info (i-MID) system panel integrated beside the electronic speedo is a fun feature and the parking system deserves some commendation if not for its lack of a simple reverse camera or a nice touch screen for the audio system. It’s still futuristic on the inside but feels like a carryover from the previous model. It also feels just a little too plasticy and perhaps Honda could have used better materials? I must add though, given the never die reputation of the Honda brand, this is probably a hard wearing car that is going to last you a long time!

After a little begging with the sales staff I finally get to sit at the helm of the famous civic. Expecting that I-Vtec to pull me ferociously away from a standing start and a well-balanced chassis and steering that will make even the worst look like a racing driver I wore huge grin just holding the steering. I looked about for a push start button but NO. There is a new flick type key instead. That’s alright I thought to myself turning the ignition on as I watched the electronic display come to life and light up. It’s surprisingly quiet! Stick the gear into “D” and tap the accelerator and the little I-Vtec 1.6 does not disappoint. It’s not going to set any lap records but it pulls like a Honda. The chassis feels composed at corners and steering feels a little lazy but overall the handling is as a Civic should be. It gives you the boy racer feel. Step it harder and this car just wants to keep going. The 4 side disc brake provide adequate stopping and that is a delight knowing that behind the wheel is going to be a 19 year old teenager who has no clue about the laws of physics.

It was sad to give the Civic bad but I still went away with a little disappointment just knowing the previous civic, well, it was a Civic. This one feels to matured and might be to the liking of an older age group. To the current teenagers, fear not, there are still other cars out there…. It’s a good car, but is it as good as the older civics? That is a question to be answered by all who own it.

What I like
handling
peppy engine
legroom

What I do not like
new design
lack of some features
no keyless entry
price??

Honda Civic, long established name in the market

The overall look is not as eye catching as previous generation.. Price is not as competitive as similar category of other similar Jap/Kor brand

I still believe the reliability is still there. Engine is quite responsive, though still the same type of engine as the previous generation

What I like
FC efficiency, engine, interior dash board design

What I do not like
Price, it is on the high side compare to other made with similar category

Currently driving a civic, which my COE is reaching its end soon. I must say, when i went to see the civic, it kinda below my expectation for the price that it is being priced at. The car looks plain as compared to other models in the market. Not much new technology in the car as compared to the previous model.

What I like
Its a Honda

What I do not like
Low end specs
No longer able to indent sunroof models
High Price as compared to other brands in the similar category.

Honda Civic. This name is already famous in the market and do not need much advertising.

Was driving a Toyota before getting this Honda Civic. I would say that it was a right move to change to a Honda. The ride is more fun as compared and comfort level is on par.

Reliability - Honda cars never have much issues with reliability. The engine is fun and also reliable. How is that possible? That, I cannot give you an answer but what I can tell you is that, you will never go wrong with a Honda. Maintaining a Honda is easy as well. You can use any engine oil available in the market and even though the servicing interval is 10k / 6 months, you can actually drag it a bit more before changing and the engine still performs well.

Engine performance. This is again, not much explanation needed. The engine delivers the performance that you need or want. On days where you want to drive like a Formula 1 car, you can. On days where you just want to sit back and cruise along, you can too. The engine gives you both performance and smoothness.

What I like
I love the fact that Honda is able to give you both performance and reliability. Both of that factors in a car. The engine is really good.

What I do not like
I do not like the looks of the stock rims. Please change it if you can! :)

I test drove a Hinda Civic recently and was very pleased with the car. Civic is one of the oldest models of Honda and this 2012 model has changed from a contemporary "family-style" sedan to a "luxury-style" sedan.
Additional features have been added into the car which is a vast difference from its earlier model.
One of the new features even allows me to monitor my driving patterns and manage my car's FC. This is really useful especially when fuel prices are so expensive nowadays!

What I like
The driving experience that this car gives
Good resale value
Convenient service centres
Good pre and post sales service

What I do not like
Nothing- No complaints about the car

I've been waiting for the current Civic for years, it finally arrived but with great disappointment. The previous model was introduced more than 6 years ago and after 6 long years, nothing much has been changed or improved. There are no introduction of major new technologies and features over the old model.

The 1.6 engine and the 5-speed auto gearbox are carried over from the old car unchanged! The 0-100km/h time of 12.4 seconds is another great disappointment. The areas of styling for both exterior and interior are similar to that of the old model.

What I like
Nothing

What I do not like
Old engine and gearbox
Unimaginative styling
No major new features or technologies over the old model
Poor Fuel Consumption

Drove the 2012 Civic 1.6 5 speed auto...

The new civic has shifted from high performance to comfort, luxuries and fuel economy. Right from the start, the cranking of the engine is very refine, quiet and vibration is kept to a low minimum. Impressive!

Despite the disappointment in the hard plastic and edgy angular dashboard design, the new digital instrumental coupled with the new media info screen in the centre, impresses me the most. The speedo sets looks 3D in view.

<Driving It>
As with any Honda cars, their automatics are the most throttle responsive compared to other makes, so this Civic is no exception! The throttle is very sensitive to the right foot input and it accelerates accordingly. The engine and the gearbox coordination work very well with each other, delivering very smooth and refine driving experience. At idling, the engine is very quiet and vibration-free. The paddle shifts are available, but in auto mode, the transmission is really good enough.

<Other impression>
One thing I realise that the brakes of the new Civic are weak, the performance are not very impressive as the bite is not strong. One needs to apply more force to the pedal to slow down the car. Another thing I noted was the road noise and exterior noise intrusion, while the exterior noise intrusion is still acceptable, the road noise is intrusive compare to other models i.e. Elantra, Fluence, Corolla...
A check under the undercarriage, the Civic lacks of rubberised coating, perhaps that's the reason why the noise insulation against the road is not that good. Despite having insulation materials within the rear wheel arches, they don't really improve insulation, perhaps only cut down on water splashing sound during rainy days...

Steering feels weighty, good, but turning radius is big. Riding is comfortable. Visibility out in front is especially good, so is other directions compared to the blindspot bound Elantra...

What I like
- Standard factory fitted equipments, like reverse sensors, GPS, camera... These are some of which I knew.

- The responsiveness of the engine and the 5 speed auto transmission. Very smooth and refine.

- Nice and improve to the futuristic digital instrumental sets.

- Nice exterior styling, sort of grows on me.

What I do not like
- Disappointing dashboard design, too edgy... The entire dashboard is made of cheap hard plastics, doesn't sound solid upon knocking...

- Intrusive road noise spoils the overall refinement the engine delivers.

- One piece rear folding seatback.

- Weak brakes despite having four discs all round.
