Honda Jade 1.5 RS VTEC Turbo (A) Review
15 Jul 2016  |  Honda Reviews
The new Honda Jade RS seats six, sports an interesting turbocharged engine with Earth Dreams Technology and drives more like a hatch than an MPV.

Review
Was deciding between HR-V/Vezel, CR-V Kia Caren/Niro, Nissan Sienta/Qasqai, Civic 1.5 among others. Happened to test drive Jade at KM, liked it and bought the very last Cobalt Blue version. As of May 2018, Honda have stop selling Jade RS in Singapore.

So far enjoying it especially the drive, handling and sound proofing.

Jade RS is also sold by Honda HK; There are a couple of video reviews at https://www.Honda.Com.Hk/index.Php/tc/models/jade-rs-2016

What I like
1. Stylish: Front reminds me of Honda Civic 8th gen. KM sweeten the deal by including Mugen wing spoiler.
2. Stable: Low profile and rear double wish-bone suspension means ride is stable when compared with compact SUVs that uses torsion beams such as Vezel/HRV/Qashai.
3. Turbo engine: responsive in a gentle sense. Honda tuned the engine more for comfort than power but there is still ample power to go 90-100 km/h quickly and to overtake.
4. Digital dashboard : especially with FC indicator. I drive more light-footed nowadays. :-)
5. FC : so far 14-15 km/l with 70% highway/30% city driving. Better than my previous 1.8L Civic. Perhaps even better FC after 1st month engine oil change?
6. Sound : quiet coupled with smooth drive means I often have passengers sleeping in the car
7. 2nd row seats : rear air-con, ample leg room and higher seating suitable for adults and elderly.
8. Rear seats : more suitable for kids, can be folded one at a time to make space for boot.

What I do not like
1. No audio control on steering wheel
2. Heated seat : no use in Singapore
3. Not much mod available
4. Limited trunk space: but then this is a compact station wagon, so...
5. 2 seats on second row but this is a matter of perspective. Honda Japan just announced a 5 seater version this May 2018. Perhaps KM/PI may bring it in

Read all the reviews here about Honda Jade RS, some which I disagree. The Jade is able to summon its horses much better than its predecessor, Stream, which I drove the 2.0l version. You need to check if you are in the "S"Ports mode or "D"Rive mode. In addition, did you turn on "Start/stop" And Econ features? Both this will tone down your acceleration and responsiveness in exchange for better FC.

I've personally switched to "S" And drag the gear using paddle shift to over 5,000 rpm and went toe-on-toe with a Subaru Rex.

The complains about 4-seat or lack of boot space is again... Perspective. To me, the Jade offers flexibility, especially if you have a family size of >5 (6 to be exact). The rear seats can be folded down. Unlike Stream, where the whole rear seats were folded, the Jade can be folded one rear seat at a time. When seating 5, the last seat *is* boot space. You can't achieve that with a 5-seater. You don't have the flexibility to convert boot space to a seat and vice versa.

The Jade RS is designed as a performance, compact MPV (station wagon) rather than a comfort MPV. That has been addressed by the Odyssey. The cheaper alternative is the Mobilo.

Good sound proofing, good build quality (made in Japan; Even better than Civic).

A light-footer will see >14km/l on a 70% Highway/30% City drive. Heavy footers will see >12km/l.

In summary, the Jade is designed at a very specific target audience where you need to move more than 5 people at times, but less than 7. The main draw is its performance, which could easily top any MPV in its category. No other MPV will come close to the Jade... Literally.

NOTE: The Honda Jade RS rims are specially designed to reduce noise. There's a reason why it came stock with Yokohama dB tires (further noise reduction).

What I like
The drive and handling. Being lower and wider than the Stream, it offers better handling and cornering.

The engine, when you play around with "S", the turbo kicking in (don't just floor, I find it better if you release midway and accelerate again), plus paddle shifting for manual control. Of course, not to compare with performance cars like Evo or WRX. Those are different category. But this *is* the Evo/WRX in compact MPV group.

External styling. How many times have I got people snapping pictures of my car... enuf said.

Lower operating cost. I've driven the 2.0l Stream. It could do 9-10km/l. So 12-13km/l is good for me. The road tax is that of a 1.5l, which is under $600 a year.

What I do not like
Missing center seat.

It was always the pet peeve that Stream haters complained about. i.e. the mid-row, center seat is uncomfortable and not a real seat.

Perhaps Honda listened and chose to remove it. And then, another group complained the absence and sacrifice of carrying one more person. I guess you can't please the whole world.

I find the fuel tank a tad small at 47l. Will be good if they could put in a 52l tank.

Price-wise, it's quite expensive.

The dashboard could use a little more R&D with the latest intelligent technology, e.g. configurable dashboards.

Missing rear aircon from my previous Stream.

Good day,

Drove this ride for 3 months. Test drive several other cars like 308sw, HRV, shuttle hybrid, qasqai 1.2and 2L, kia caren, Forester, XV, opel astra Tourer, civic 1.5T, CLA180.

What I like
1. Stable: low profile w double wish bone suspension is stable on himp or cornering as compared w compact suv with torsion beam like HRV, qasqai or even shuttle which is bouncy.
2. Sound:The cabin is quiet unlike traditional jap hallow car when rain or road noise. I would say the sound proof on doors, floor, firewall, bonnet, roof were well done as compared w my previous ride w Branded US double sound proof for ice.
3. Engine: responsive low rev w turbo kick in at 1.5k rev. Going to 90-100km/hr easily w 2k rpm w eco off. Drive is more on comfort then sudden surge like civic turbo although both use same engine and turbo( i will love e civic turbo is not bec the 2x child)
4. Seat at 2nd row is more comfort w armrest and inclined seat huge leg room. (Kia carens SX lumbar seat r best for driver)
5. Auto electronic dim rear mirror and hydroponic coating side mirror.
6. 6 x speakers sound system as default
7. Not mainstream for uber or grab be seen as "taxi"
8. 3rd row seemed small however the head room is much higher than kia Carmen.

What I do not like
1. Tyre: stock tyre sport MTT seemed not able to handle well from stationary to left/right turn w eco off. Tend to slip. Maybe roo much power for it to handle
2. Engine: if only the same power and torque is tuned as civic tyrbo will be great when borh my childs are not in e ride.-this can be tuned w dyno test when warranty over.
3. Dont have e honda sensing features especially adaptive cruising control
4. Heated seat and electronic is unless. These cost at least 10k over PI ones. Honda should learn from kia on ventilated AC seat. This is why i choose PI over Kah.
5. Limited trunk space when 3rd row seat are up. Need to get roof rail w travel box.

I was initially considering Kia Carens 1.7 CRDi, Toyota Wish 1.8, Kia Niro, Honda Civic 1.5T before diving in on a Honda Jade RS 1.5T

There is nothing wrong with all vehicles I have shortlisted and considered except they either sit 5 or 7, handles like a sedan or like a van.

The Kia Carens 1.7 CRDi's power was exceptional whereas the Wish's interior space is more usable. Since i eventually deduce I may need the extra seats, the Kia Niro and Civic are set aside, they have their interesting points and I liked both of them. I did find the new Kia models very impressively built.

The Honda Jade RS seems to be in the middle between all my shortlisted candidates. It drives like a sedan - deceiving nimble and agile handling masks it's true size and length, longer than that of a toyota wish or kia carens.

It never seems to run out of steam when you floor the accelerator.
the 7-speed CVT may take some fun out of the drive but does provide the car with smooth usable power that seems linear and never ending (well, in our roads lol!)

I did considered the Hybrid variant of the jade. However, CEVs rebates actually increase the vehicle depreciation and unfortunately for me, i never drive enough milage to cover the extra depreciation. (PARF = X%[ARF - CEVS] etc...)

ps: although the Jade was originally designed for the chinese domestic market, the Jade RS and Jade Hybrid models in Singapore are japanese made models.

could have written more but i figure it is time to sleep...

What I like
Flexible seating arrangements

Frugal - highways easily 18km/l - 20km/l, streets can get 11-12km/l if you have a light foot like mine hahaha...I am averaging 12.8km/l with combined 30 highway/70 street. I am expecting improvement after 1k oil change to synthetic.

More than sufficient power when fully loaded
Linear power & Smoooooth power
Well built.
Powered seat adjustment for both passenger and driver.
Sleek design

I have the Jade for a month and it is still growing on me :)

What I do not like
Sits 4 instead of 5 when storage space is required, but I can live with this.

being a VTEC Turbo, it doesn't feel like VTEC anymore haha

a little expensive...

equipment could have been better... (i hope i'm not asking too much since Kia Carens is 10k cheaper even after factoring the 5k CEVS rebate - badly appointed Kias are things of the past)

Collected Jade a month ago. Totally love the drive and sleekness. Kept my 2010 RB3 Odyssey as well due to family size. As a Honda fan, reliability is my top most priority. Cruising experience is amazing for a MPV on the expressway and you might exceed the speed limit without realising. In terms of cost, the fuel consumption and road tax compared to my Odyssey is economically low.

What I like
Sleek and aerodynamic design.
Turbo engine.
Reliability.

What I do not like
Less well equipped interior.
Price is on high side.
Not much mod needed.

Other than the relatively attractive exteriors compared to its ugly twin (read Mobilio), the new Honda Jade is a poor proposition to buyers looking for an MPV today.

Here's why...

What I like
1. Exterior shape and curves reflects new Civic-era design language (contrasts sharply with the portly
Mobilio.

2. Small engine, 'big' interior. Practical by virtue of Singapore COE, Road and Petrol Tax structure

3. Versatility as a 6-seater people carrier

What I do not like
1. Whiny CVT and small engine capacity. The Jade didn't summon its horses as quickly as typical Honda drivers would like to.

2. Impractical seating configurations. 2nd/middle row was two individual seats with a fixed centre arm rest. Most MPV owners would prefer a bench seats for daily use. (The Mobilio scores better in this aspect)

3. Little trunk space. Rolled up floor covering suspended above the meager trunk space leaves not enough room for a standard sized pram, much less a road trip up north.

I especially like the design of this MPV. Despite being of low-height, the Jade is compatible with most multi-level car parks. It can fit six passengers comfortably thanks to its smart seat-sliding mechanism.

It also has a practical third row which can be folded independently - very useful when it comes to using it to carry around cargo. All I have to do is to pull a strap and a flat and user-friendly luggage space is created.

The Jade RS is by no means a performance car but it does feature some cool tech like the 'Honda Sensing' driver assist safety suite and something called 'Agile Handling Assist' which improves cornering and operates like other torque-vectoring systems.

What I like
Versatile cabin configuration
Stylish exterior
Nicely finished interior cabin

What I do not like
A little expensive compared to similarly specced cars on the market
