CCTVs have limited effectiveness in curbing illegal parking

CCTV cameras at 10 illegal parking hot spots were switch on by the Land Transport Authority yesterday. But the move did not deter motorists from breaking the law.
The Straits Times visited the locations and found drivers flouting the law despite the newly installed cameras. For instance, at least 10 cars were found parking illegally in Jurong East Central within a half-hour stretch.
Speaking to the local papers, a 65-year old retiree said the carparks were full and other options would be inconvenient as they were quite a distance away. Others also claimed that the warning signs were too small.
The signs displayed on lamp posts state that motorists will be fined up to $300 and given three demerit points if caught for parking illegally.
A spokesperson from LTA said that it will continue to monitor the situation at these 10 spots, including Boon Lay Way, Serangoon Central and Commonwealth Avenue West.
