The Straits Times reported that 17 motorists failed the breathalyser test in a four-hour islandwide operation in locations such as Nicoll Highway, Penang Road and the Balestier area yesterday.
Those who failed the breathalyser test were put in a police van and taken to the Traffic Police headquarters in Ubi for a second test. This test, called the Breath Evidential Analyser (BEA) test, would show just how much alcohol they had in their breath. The highest BEA reading recorded yesterday was 67 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of breath, almost double the legal limit of 35 micrograms of alcohol.
A total of 1,541 drink drivers were arrested in the first six months this year, six more than last year. Last year, 3,019 motorists failed the breathalyser test, a 10 percent increase from 2011.
If convicted, drink drivers can be disqualified from driving for at least one year. They could also lose their licence. In addition, first time offenders can be fined a maximum of $5,000. Repeat offenders can be fined up to $30,000 and given a mandatory jail term of up to three years. If there is death or serious injury, offenders may also be given up to six strokes of the cane.
