In an unexpected finish to the thrilling Hungarian Grand Prix, Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo claimed podium position, as Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton flank the Australian on the podium.
Ricciardo took the lead after perfectly executing two overtaking manoeuvres on lap 67 and 68 to move from third to first. Alonso did his best to defend his lead but eventually yielded to Ricciardo while managing to defend his second position until the dance of the chequered flags ahead of the Mercedes.
Hamilton's brilliant and aggressive drive from pit lane to third did not seem feasible after spinning out on the first lap that could have eliminated him from the race.
However, his race result seems to have been overshadowed by another case of team order saga, which saw the works requesting the Brit to make way for the other silver arrows, although both were on different strategies and fighting for the championship title.
Despite two requests from the team, Hamilton refused to give way to Rosberg, and replied the latter is free to overtake him if he gets close to the Brit. Naturally the German driver was not too pleased and despite his best efforts on fresher tyres on the final stint, could not catch the Brit.
After scoring two Did Not Finish (DNF), Felipe Massa finished a decent fifth while team mate Valtteri Bottas scored a decent eight. Kimi Raikkonen in the other single seater Prancing Horse finished a strong sixth ahead of defending champion Sebastian Vettel in the other Red Bull.
Ericsson lost the rear of his Caterham on the exit of Turn 3 and crashed into the barriers, filling the track with debris, which called for the immediate deployment of the Safety Car. Button, Ricciardo and Hamilton were among the drivers to pit immediately and were rewarded with better track position. Rosberg, having missed the opportunity, was demoted to fourth behind Massa, Button and new race leader Ricciardo. Alonso was down in eighth and Hamilton remained 13th, but the drying track gave importance to tyre strategies.
The restart of the race was delayed by Romain Grosjean spinning off while trying to warm his slick tyres, and normal racing services resumed at the end of lap 13. Button, who had opted for a second set of intermediates, took the lead, but it was short-lived with the rain staying away for the rest of the afternoon.
The safety car returned for a second stint, after Sergio Perez spun at the final corner and wrecked his Force India against the pit wall.
Ricciardo took the opportunity to pit for a fresh set of slicks along with Massa, giving Alonso the lead at the restart on lap 26. In a case of deja-vu Vettel ran wide coming out of the final corner and spun merely kissing the pit wall, avoiding serious accident. Alonso stayed out until lap 38 and took on a set of soft tyres that saw him to the end of the race.
The result closes the gap between Rosberg and Hamilton to 11 points at the top of the championship and leaves the title battle perfectly poised ahead of the four-week gap to the Belgian Grand Prix at the end of August.
At the end of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Alonso is the sole driver to have finished within points classification this season while the gap between Rosberg and Hamilton stands at 11 points.
Rosberg, with 202 points retains his lead in the Drivers' boards, while Hamilton and Ricciardo trail behind with 191 and 131 points. Mercedes continue to dominate the Constructors' standings with 393 points, ahead of Red Bull and Ferrari with 219 and 142 points respectively.
