The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced on Thursday that works to widen a 5.8km stretch between Clementi Avenue 6 and Adam Road on the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) are now complete.
The widened stretch has been under construction since July 2011 and now hold an additional lane on each side of the expressway - up to five lanes on some sections and three lanes on others. It has been open to traffic progressively since last July. The widened stretch is expected to ease congestion during the morning and evening peak hours and improve travelling time for motorists living in the west.
The $78 million project also included the widening of three flyovers - Eng Neo, Chantek and Anak Bukit.
The PIE widening project is part of a number of measures by the transport authority to smoothen the flow of traffic for those living in the west. Other upcoming projects include the widening of Clementi Road to accommodate four lanes in each direction.
Also, a dual two-lane flyover will be constructed to improve traffic flow at the intersection of West Coast Highway and Jalan Buroh (Buroh Circus). A 3.9km stretch between Pasir Panjang Road and West Coast Road will also be widened.
In addition, LTA would also build two flyovers to provide dedicated access to vehicles exiting and entering the PIE from Clementi Avenue 6, and those doing so at Bukit Batok East Avenue 3. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015, and is projected to cut down on vehicles having to criss-cross at slip roads and smoothen traffic on the main expressway.
