Datuk Dr. Wee Ka Siong, a Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in Malaysia, cited transport and foreign ministries from the Peninsular will meet officials from Singapore at the nearest juncture, to convince the city state to reconsider its decision to match Malaysia's toll increase from next month.
He told the Malaysian press the meeting was to clear the air over the matter, noting that Singapore's reason for the toll hike at its checkpoint was unjustified.
"We have to meet them personally to rectify their perception that Malaysia introduced a new charge at the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex to pay the concessionaire and to upgrade the Eastern Dispersal Link, and it should not be an excuse for them to increase their toll charge," he said yesterday.
Datuk Dr. Wee, who is also President of the Malaysian Chinese Association, made the comments after a meeting with the Johor Baru Tiong-Hua Association and Chinese community leaders for a dialogue.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA), in a statement detailing the new rates, said it had been a longstanding policy for the Republic to match tolls set by Malaysia.
