Hamilton snatches pole from Rosberg by seven thousandths of a second

Mercedes AMG Petronas have secured their 13th pole position - out of 14 races in 2014 - after Lewis Hamilton snatched away the first slot of the grid from his team mate Nico Rosberg and a strong Daniel Ricciardo of Infiniti Red Bull Racing. In addition of being the team's fifth front row lockout, this is Hamilton's sixth pole of the season - just one less than his team mate.
Hamilton achieved the feat after recording a time of 1:45:681 - just 0.007 seconds faster than Rosberg at 1:45:688 - the smallest gap since the 2010 German Grand Prix.
Ricciardo clocked a fastest time of 1:45:854, about one tenth of a second faster than defending champion Sebastian Vettel at 1:45:902 - 0.005 seconds faster than Fernando Alonso in fifth.
Although Alonso finished the first and final practice at the top of the charts, he could only manage a decent fifth, a little disappointing considering the surprise and strong performance of the Prancing Horse during practice sessions.
Kimi Raikkonen in the other F14 T managed seventh - after abandoning Q3 with just one run due to software issues. "It's some electronic thing, when I tried to go on power it was just cutting off. I hope it is just a small thing but it was enough to destroy our qualifying. I'm pretty sure they can fix it for the race," explained the Iceman.
Williams did a fine job by securing sixth and eight - by Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas - near to their positions in final practice. Kevin Magnussen and Daniil Kvyat - of McLaren and Torro Rosso respectively - fill out the final two of the top 10 positions after Button failed to make it to Q3 by 0.023 seconds to the Russian.
Hamilton's pole came as a surprise considering he had a bad lock up into the first corner, yet he managed to recover well and narrowly edge ahead of Rosberg to pole. Hamilton has claimed P1 twice in Singapore, back in 2009 and 2012. He went on to win the race in 2009, but in 2012, he didn't see the podium after retiring due to issues with his gearbox.
Being a tight and twisty street circuit with limited overtaking opportunities, it is crucial to secure pole at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Only twice - in 2008 and in 2012 - has the pole setter not won the race under the lights.
If Hamilton and Rosberg finish in the order that they start tomorrow - the point gap between the two Silver Arrows would narrow down to 15 points from the current 22. With less than 24 hours to go before the start of the 2014 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix, the excitement has never felt this electrifying.
