A visibly moved Luca di Montezemolo gave his farewell address in front of more than 2,000 employees of Ferrari's GT Division who were gathered at the Maranello factory to celebrate the Chairman who took control of the brand after the demise of Enzo Ferrari and turned Ferrari into the most powerful brand in the world, in addition to being perhaps the most profitable business unit within the Fiat Group.
Although he was unable to speak with each employee individually, Montezemolo was eager to meet with them as a group, having already spoken to the Gestione Sportiva Formula One Division before the team's departure for the Japanese and Russian Grands Prix.
Montezemolo took the stage after two short introductory speeches were delivered by Vice-Chairman Piero Ferrari and CEO Amedeo Felisa, in addition to a film documenting Montezemolo's hugely successful 23 years with the Italian automaker.
Montezemolo was, not surprisingly, interrupted several times during his speech with long applause from the assembled audience. He also recalled the marque's triumphs in Formula One, in which Ferrari remains the most successful team ever, as well as the success, both critically and commercially, of the Prancing Horse's GT cars around the world.
After Montezemolo's address, representatives of the employees from the factory joined him on stage for a symbolic embrace and as he left, the Chairman was engulfed by a large crowd of admirers wanting to shake his hand, take selfies with him and generally express their enormous affection and respect for the former Chariman.
