The eighth and latest generation Passat is still going strong

Hotel Romazzino, nestled near a dazzling white beach in Sardinia, Italy, is the perfect place to soak yourself in splendid isolation without giving up on the finer things in life. As it turns out, nothing can be more apt than for Volkswagen to launch its latest Passat here.
Since its first batch was launched in 1973, Volkswagen has been developing an authentic language for the Passat that is neither too traditional nor trendy. This balanced approach, which allows the German carmaker to express its modernity without coming across as trying too hard, is reflected in its eighth and latest generation Passat.
Quality, elegance and a dash of sportiness come together beautifully in the Volkswagen Passat, which is anything but ordinary. By fusing together superior materials, with bold lines and a brash design, what you get is a car that will start interesting conversations and end boring imaginations. The fact that the car is based on the adaptable MQB platform further enhances the appeal of the Passat.
According to Dirk Nessenius, Head of Technical Project Management Passat, the car was created using the 'Volkswagen way', which is basically the process of continuous improvement and solving problems systematically and sustainably in all areas. While more than 22 million units were sold globally, with over 1.1 million units sold last year, it wouldn't come as a surprise if this car exceeds the latter figure.
A few noteworthy improvements have been made to the Passat. Firstly, thanks to the intelligent use of lightweight materials, it's 85kg lighter than its predecessor.
Secondly, the dimensions of the car have shrunk slightly but have miraculously managed to increase cabin space for passengers all round.
Thirdly, dubbed the Active Info Display, the instrument panel is now fully digitalised, which makes the Passat the first ever Volkswagen car to have this interactive feature. What's also interactive is Car-Net - the mobile online services that will be offered with the car.
At launch time, the available engines for both the estate and the sedan are the 147bhp rated 1.4-litre TSI ACT and 2.0-litre TDI as well as the mouth-watering 240bhp rated 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo TDI.
Both the 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre sedan variants have been confirmed for the Singapore market and should arrive by the second quarter of 2015. Whether the 1.4-litre TSI and other TDI variants will be included in the lineup remain to be seen.
