The Straits Times reported that ComfortDelGro, the largest taxi operator here, took a record 35.6 million taxi bookings last year, 10 percent more than 2013. About half of these bookings were made through its mobile app, ComfortDelGro Taxi Booking, which was downloaded 2.5 million times during the year. In a statement yesterday, the firm said the record was despite growing competition from independent third-party booking apps.
Bookings spiked on rainy days. The busiest month was August, when the south-west monsoon hit. More than 3.1 million bookings were made that month, six percent higher than the monthly average. Daily bookings peaked on 31st October, one of the wettest Fridays of last year. More than 124,000 bookings were made, 28 percent more than usual.
ComfortDelGro, which owns the Comfort and CityCab brands, is giving out taxi or diesel vouchers to 50 cabbies with the most bookings last year. This includes a 16-year veteran who clocked more than 8,300 booking jobs, which works out to an average of about 23 jobs a day.
The firm has meanwhile revamped its taxi booking app. Its new features include route recommendations and fare estimates. The group plans to extend the app to its businesses in Britain and Australia and to roll it out in Perth later this year.
It is not just ComfortDelGro, but third-party booking app GrabTaxi has also seen a rise in bookings. It now has more bookings per day than it did for the entire month of January last year, said its General Manager for Singapore Lim Kell Jay, without giving actual figures.
