Smart has revealed its new Fortwo Cabrio ahead of its world premiere at this months Frankfurt Motor Show, with its iconic city car now featuring a novel folding fabric roof.
The Smart Fortwo Cabrio offers two convertible configurations: at the touch of a button, the fabric soft top can be automatically opened creating a large sliding canvas sunroof. Or if so desired, the car can be transformed into a full fledge cabriolet by folding the roof onto the tailgate along with the rear screen, at which point the two roof rails can be removed and stored into the boot.
The new Fortwo Cabrio is also the most rigid Smart Cabrio ever, with torsional strength improved by around 15 percent compared with the predecessor. The Cabrio has also been specifically reinforced in decisive places, with a large steel cross under the vehicle, two torsional bulkheads under the vehicle at the front and rear and an inner tube in the A-pillars made of high strength hot-formed steel.
The new cabrio will initially be available with two state-of-the-art three-cylinder engines rated at 71bhp and 90bhp. Both engines can be combined with the five-speed manual transmission or a fully automatic twinamic dual-clutch transmission.
The new Smart Cabrio will be available for order from mid-November and is set to first reach dealers in Febuary 2016.
