From Monday (Feb 1st), motorised bicycles sold in Singapore will have to meet stricter requirements, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA), reported The Straits Times.
Motorised bikes, otherwise known as power-assisted bicycles, will have to comply with European Standard EN15194, currently applied in Australia and 33 countries across Europe.
The requirements include having a maximum motor power output rating of 250 watts and progressive motor power assistance, which makes the bikes less likely to jerk when moving from a stationary position. The bicycles will also be required to have an unladen weight of no more than 20kg.
Members of the public are also advised to look out for an orange LTA seal when buying motorised bicycles to ensure they meet the new requirements. Bikes that meet the current requirements and are affixed with a blue LTA seal will still be allowed for use on public roads.
The penalty for those found using motorised bicycles that are illegally modified or do not these requirements has also been increased since Nov 19th. First time offenders will be fined $300, while repeat offenders will be fined $500.
