It's not often we get to attend an event of a particular carmaker where it launches several interesting cars. But it seems BMW did just that.
7 Series LCI (Life Cycle Impulse)
Not only are they revealing the facelifted 7 Series flagship sedan, the Bavarian marque is also showcasing the Plug-in Hybrid version of it.
At launch, the 7 series comes in variations. From an eight and 12-cylinder to full electric and Plug-in Hybrid, buyers of the flagship sedan will be spoilt for choices.
In Singapore, for instance, buyers can expect to get the base 730Li, two different variants of the 740Li and the top-of-the-line M760Li. Needless to say, our market can expect the 745Le xDrive Plug-in Hybrid as well.
However, the Plug-in Hybrid as well as the top-of-the-line model are only available on an indent basis.
Specs-wise, the Plug-in Hybrid is equipped with a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder powerplant and an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed Steptronic transmission that's good for a combined output of 394bhp and a whooping 600Nm of torque.
The M760Li, on the other hand, comes with a gigantic 6.6-litre V12 unit that pumps out a ridiculous 585bhp and 850Nm of twisting force from just 1,600rpm. Thus, the car will sprint from zero to 100km/h in just 3.8 seconds flat. This is almost as quick as the Aston Martin DB11 AMR, a car that is also equipped with a 12-cylinder engine.
The 730Li, being the base model, gets a 2.0-litre four-cylinder powerplant that's good for 261 horses and 400Nm of torque. The 740Li will be getting a more powerful 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine that will pump out 340bhp and 450Nm of torque.
In terms of design, the 7er now comes with a bigger kidney grille. In fact, it's 40% larger than the previous model, giving it that instantly recognisable look. The car also comes with newly designed head and taillights that are slimmer and sharply defined.
Interestingly, the flagship sedan additional sound insulation around the rear wheel arches has been implemented for the sake of luxury. It even sports thicker glass windows, laminated to 5.1mm, for the windscreen, side and rear windows - all for the purpose of enhanced comfort.
Speaking of comfort, the new appointments in the 7er's cabin has to be its best yet. Everything we've seen so far - from its Nappa leather seats to the new trimming on the dashboard - exude refinement and extravagance that befit a royal family.
The 7 Series is expected to arrive in Singapore in the third quarter of this year.
8 Series Convertible/Gran Coupe
As if launching the facelifted flagship sedan wasn't enough, BMW also pulled the covers off the 8 Series Convertible. And of course, the debut of the convertible doesn't mark the end of the 8 Series family. A four-door Gran Coupe version will arrive to complete the range.
According to BMW, Singapore will be getting both the 840i and the juicier M850i xDrive Convertible.
The M850i will come with a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 that pumps out 530bhp and 750Nm of twisting force to all four wheels from the word go. Mated to an eight-speed gearbox, this car will get to 100km/h from nought in a respectable 3.9 seconds.
Clearly, also respectable is its design. With its slim headlamps, contours at the right places, large air intakes and a fully electric soft-top roof that operates in 15 seconds at the touch of a button and when travelling at up to 50km/h, the 8er's sheet metal is highly captivating.
On the inside, based on what we've seen, everything looks sumptuous to the eyes and to the touch. Understandably, the car comes with a range of high-class options such as Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, Automatic Soft Close function for the doors and glass applications for gear selector.
Tentatively, the 8 Series Convertible is expected to reach our shores at the end of this year.
