The new Ranger is more car-like in terms of exterior and interior styling, and also features new technology to bring the truck up to date. Ford will offer the Ranger in three different cab styles, two or four-wheel-drive, two types of ride heights, and four series options.
At launch, there will be two diesel engines available for the Ford Ranger. Both are Ford common rail Duratorq TDCi units, with the base being a 2.2-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 150bhp and 375Nm of torque, and the other engine being a 3.2-litre TDCi inline five-cylinder that has 200bhp and 470Nm of torque. Both engines are available with either six-speed automatic or manual transmissions.
The 4x4 models come with an electronically controlled transfer case that allows drivers to switch from four-wheel-drive to two-wheel-drive mode through an electronic switch located on the console, while low range gearing can also be enabled.
All Rangers will also come with a new Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system that includes four-wheel traction control, yaw control and roll-over mitigation, as standard. Other new technological features include Rear Park Assist and a new Rear view Camera system, as well as the option of side curtain airbags for all models.
Stephen Odell, chairman and CEO, Ford of Europe, said: "The new Ranger is an exciting and dynamic vehicle that will undoubtedly raise the bar in the pickup market. The scope of its capability and technology are further evidence of how powerful the One Ford initiative is in helping us globally to develop a whole range of all-new class-leading vehicles. We look forward to bringing new Ranger to European customers by 2012 and I am confident it will exceed their expectations."
The new Ford Ranger will be produced at three locations around the world, beginning from the middle of next year. Initial production will begin at Ford's plant in Rayong, Thailand, and its Argentina and South Africa factory will follow suit shortly after.
