The news was announced by Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault-Nissan, at a meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron. Ghosn confirmed that the next generation Qashqai will be wholly designed, developed, engineered and produced in the UK.
The car will be designed at Nissan's European Design Centre located in Paddington, London, and then further developed at the Nissan Technical Centre Europe in Cranfield, Bedfordshire. The car will then be produced at Nissan’s Sunderland factory in the North East of England, which already produces the current Qashqai.
The project will see Nissan invest a total of £192 million (€215 million) into its UK operations, which Cameron acknowledged as a boost to the British economy. "This investment from Nissan is fantastic news and a great demonstration of the strength and vitality of the UK car industry," Cameron said at the meeting.
