Mazda is still developing its rotary powertrain technologies
25 Feb 2013|9,680 views
Mazda, the carmaker that's probably known for its widespread use of rotary engines among other technology innovations, has confirmed it is continuing developments on its iconic engines - last used in the Mazda RX-8.
The rotary engine was withdrawn from utilisation due to its low efficiency and inability to meet current stricter emissions regulations and more importantly a higher fuel consumption figure in this uncertain economy. While Mazda is heavily investing on the new range of SkyActiv technologies, advances in technology and engineering methods from the SkyActiv project may be applied to the rotary engine for more economical fuel efficiency and better emissions.
Mazda also claims utilising advanced ignition systems like laser instead of traditional spark plugs may boost performance without the expense of fuel consumptions or emissions. A Mazda engineer who spoke to British weekly magazine Autocar aspires for the new Rotary to be put in production in five year's time.
