Public feedback on COE and car ownership schemes sought by LTA

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is canvassing views on how best to tweak the Certificate of Entitlement (COE) and car ownership schemes.
The LTA said in a statement on Friday that the aim is to better separate luxury cars from mass market ones and make the vehicle quota system more equitable so that those who own more than one car do not deprive car hopefuls from owning one.
This, LTA explained, could mean imposing extra levies on multiple car owners. The LTA noted however that given the limited number of COEs available, it is "difficult and also not appropriate for the Government to decide who should be allowed to own cars and how many cars he or she should be allowed to own".
The move comes three weeks after Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said the Government is and considering ways to make vehicle quota system more "socially equitable".
The LTA said it has already started to gather suggestions from the motor industry and academics. Focus group discussions will also be held with the members of the public. All feedback will be assessed and the LTA will provide an update to the public later this year.
Members of the public may submit their ideas or suggestions at http://talk2lta.lta.gov.sg/coe till 7th July.
