A van driver who cracked a motorist's windscreen when he knocked on it with his gemstone ring after a road rage incident was jailed one week for mischief yesterday.
The court heard that Mr Mervyn Lau Jun Ming, 27, who had been with his girlfriend, noticed Arivalakan Narayanan Kanapathy, 55, tailgating and flashing his headlights behind, about 20 minutes earlier while driving along Bishan Road. Mr Lau then recalled cutting into Arivalakan's van's lane - but he claimed to have signalled his intention before doing so.
Nevertheless, Arivalakan continued to follow the car as he drove into the carpark. Arivalakan then parked his van in front of Mr Lau's car at Block 117, Bishan Street 12. He got out and walked towards the victim's vehicle before using the back of his right hand to rap the front windscreen, causing a crack. When he realised it had been caused by his ring, he apologised to Mr Lau and offered to make restitution.
The victim called the police after the incident at 12:06am on 1st May 2011.
Arivalakan pleaded guilty a week ago and has paid for the damage to Mr Lau's Peugeot, amounting to $1,853.
Arivalakan said he had just got a job and that his family would suffer if he goes to jail. The judge allowed him to commence his sentence on 5th July so he can settle his personal and work matters.
He could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined.
