We have heard of the predicament that is going to befall on the age-old COE system. In summary, only cars with engine capacities of less than 1.6-litre and 130bhp will stay in Cat A.
And as with any changes, there ought to be sad souls among happier ones. While many of us haven't got enough dime for any of the downpayment, we reckon some will be feeling dejected, as cars that they might have been saving up for are going to get more unattainable.
Hear us out. If natures take its course, Cat B premiums are likely to score a high - in the same way that if more people are vying for the same piece of pie, the increase in demand will cause prices to rise. That means some cars may not be as attainable as before.
According to the list provided by authorities, 41 models of different makes will belong to Cat B when the changes take effect February next year. Here are four of them.
BMW 316i
BMWs form part of every boy's dreams, and the 3 Series could just be the perfect blend of every man's needs and wants. The base variant of BMW's 3 Series, hence, could have been one of the easiest ways to own a piece of Bavarian engineering. But things might not be as 'easy' when the entirety of the 3 Series sedan falls into the 'Big Car COE' category next year.
There is, of course, more to the moniker. The 3 Series is much revered for its sublime handling, and did we mention the ergonomics? The latest generation - the F30 - is also blessed with one of the most intuitive automatic gearboxes on the market. Now it seems that there will be a bigger price to pay for all these in time to come.
Mercedes-Benz C180
Naturally, buyers in the market would want a piece of German engineering, especially when coupled with the prestigious Mercedes-Benz badge. Furthermore, the C180 boasts genuine practicality as a sedan.
The very fact that Merc's compact sedan is on this list is further backed by its immensely successful sales figures - the C180 is not only the segment's best seller, but also tops the overall sales chart to be the nation's favourite. Then again, who can resist the charm of the three-pointed star anyway?
Mercedes-Benz CLA200
The CLA is a new breed of Merc - one that captured countless souls with its youthful image and beautiful face. Its stylish coupe-ish form is definitely one of its best traits, and one that is unprecedented and few other models can surpass. Coupled with proper seats for a family of five and a decent boot, the CLA is no doubt a careful blend of pedigree, looks and practicality.
The popularity of the CLA can be seen from the fact that right after the order books were opened, the first few batches of the four-door coupe were sold out. And needless to say, the price point played an equally important part in propelling the CLA to top spots on the sales chart. And if we are right about the scaling of Cat B prices, few other cars will be able to replicate what the CLA did with its mix of emotional appeal and dollar sense.
Suzuki Swift Sport
Her forbearer was a hit - and if the current times weren't as turbulent, we would have bet our last dime that the new Swift Sport will be just as popular too. That's only because the latest incarnation is lighter and more powerful, while retaining its nimble, fun-to-drive characteristics. A quick look at the market reveals that few other models are able to replicate what Suzuki has done with the Swift Sport, even more so at this price point.
Moreover, the Swift Sport is one of the last few 'enthusiasts' ride' that comes with a proper manual transmission. Real men work with three pedals - we're sure you agree too.
