In spite of broken hearts and mourning moods due to the lost of Thailand's late king, the 33rd Thailand International Motor Expo is a happy mix of modern and futuristic cars. We head straight in and take a look at the three interesting concepts that stole the limelight:
Hyundai Enduro Concept
Making its world premiere at the Seoul Motor Show in 2015, this is a compact three-door Crossover Concept with a sleek look similar to the Hyundai Veloster - a car that features a two-door coupe on one side and a four-door hatch on the other.
Externally, the Enduro sports raised ground clearance, SUV-style fender cladding, which appear robust and protective. Its signature hexagonal front grille is connected to the large fender with an aluminum blade.
Mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that can also be found in the Hyundai Tucson, the Enduro is powered by a 2.0-litre in-line four turbocharged petrol engine with direct injection. While performance figures are unknown at the moment, we suspect the car could be right up the alley of the Infiniti Q30 when it makes it to the roads.
Mitsubishi XM Concept
This concept is the epitome of having the best of both worlds. The letter X in its name stands for crossover while the letter M is for MPV. Put them together and you get a concept that signifies a Crossover MPV.
The XM Concept features an aggressive front, large wheel arches and an edgy sculpted character line, creating the powerful and sporty look that's typical of an Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). On the other hand, floating D-pillars as well as having a cabin layout that provides three rows of seven seats suggest a free-flowing Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) personality.
While Mitsubishi hasn't announced the exact engine details of the XM Concept yet, the production version will be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol. The vehicle will also get a front-wheel drive system and high ground clearance to offer optimum all-terrain performance when production starts some time in the fourth quarter of 2017.
Nissan Nevara EnGuard Concept
Unveiled at this year's Hanover Motor Show, the Nissan Navara EnGuard Concept is dubbed to be the ultimate rescue machine. Modified from the four-wheel drive Navara pickup, this beefcake sports an overall ride height that's raised by 50mm compared to the standard Navara.
Emergency blue strobe lights and fluorescent green lights on all wheels, side steps and tow eyes have also been added. The load bed is packed with life-saving equipment including a drone to relay images of unreachable areas back to a 20.5-inch screen.
More importantly, Nissan has equipped the concept with a prototype portable battery pack, designed and developed in-house, using seven EV battery modules of 2kW unit each inside a weather-proof machined aluminum housing. When docked in place, the batteries are charged and they'll harvest power generated by the 190bhp twin-turbo 2.3-litre diesel engine.
