Caretaker contractor will be assigned to halted Downtown line worksite

The Straits Times reported that a caretaker contractor will be appointed to ensure safety on a stalled section of the Downtown Line Stage 2, after Austrian based, Alpine Bau, filed for bankruptcy.
Mr Lui Tuck Yew, Minister for Transport, said in Parliament earlier today that a possible delay and additional costs to complete the project are expected. The extent of disruption, however, can only be determined once Land Transport Authority (LTA) makes its assessment of the matter in the forthcoming weeks.
Alpine Bau was working on the Downtown Line's King Albert Park, Sixth Avenue and Tan Kah Kee stations until it filed for insolvency last month. Mr Lui assured MPs Sylvia Lim of Aljunied GRC and Chris De Souza of Holland-Bukit Timah GRC that the LTA's immediate priorities are the safety and security of the worksites and equipment - including securing partially completed structures and the recruitment of specialists to maintain tunnel boring machines and recharge wells, on top of ensuring the welfare of Alpine's workers.
