24-year old Singaporean, Mr Al-Matin Mohamed, is in critical condition in New York, U.S.A, after a driver who was trying to evade the police struck down Mr Al-Matin - who was cycling at the designated lane.
Mr Al-Matin moved to the Big Apple about a month ago to train as a pastry chef and was struck down when the suspect's car came speeding from the wrong side, at around 6:30am on Saturday, reported The Straits Times. The collision tossed Mr Al-Matin across the street and onto the pavement.
The driver eventually crashed into a building at Lexington Avenue, afterwhich he ran away.
A passerby, 36-year old Ms Cecilia Cargill, ran to help Mr Al-Matin. She told the New York Daily News his feet were on the pavement while the rest of his body was on the street as he was fighting for life. "At first he was unconscious but then he opened his eyes. I told him not to give up - He was dying. I started praying," she added.
Emergency workers took Mr Al-Matin to Bellevue Hospital, where he was being treated for head trauma, two broken legs, a fractured pelvis and a busted arm. The New York police are still hunting for the suspect and other accomplices.
The local paper reported Acting Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin shared the news on his Facebook account late last night, noting that the Singaporean was "in serious condition". "Remember Al-Matin Mohamed, a fellow Singaporean and Guardsman, in our prayers," added Mr Tan, who was formerly an army Brigadier General.
