Volkswagen has announced that it will be planning a year-long campaign in the U.S.A to mark the 75th anniversary of its arrival in the country.
Volkswagen states that the campaign will serve as a love letter to the American people and an invitation for all to be part of its electric future. The firm plans to spotlight the people, products, and places that have defined the firm and its presence in the country, and will include its return to the Super Bowl.
Volkswagen first arrived in the U.S.A 75 years ago, with two examples of the Beetle landing in New York thanks to Dutch Businessman Ben Pon. The two cars are said to have charmed Americans, and Volkswagen of America was established in 1955 to organise dealers and provide parts and service in the country. The firm then built its first U.S.A plant in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania in 1978, from which it would eventually assemble more than 1.1 million examples of the Rabbit. This plant also assembled the Rabbit GTI, a model that would win over generations of fans and spawn several hot-hatch competitors.
More recently, the firm broke ground on its Chattanooga assembly plant in 2008. It also plans to add two new vehicles in its growing electric portfolio in the U.S.A: The ID.7 and the three-row ID. Buzz.
