Volkswagen's Zwickau plant produces last combustion engine

The last model with a combustion engine left the assembly line at the Volkswagen Zwickau car factory.

The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf R with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and Estate body finished in Oryx White Pearl Effect paint was produced for a customer in Germany. From now on, only electric models of Volkswagen and of the sister brands Audi and Seat will be produced in Zwickau.

Zwickau is the first Volkswagen large car factory making the switch over completely into electric mobility. The investments for conversion amount to around $1.8 billion. In the final expansion stage starting from 2021, six Modular Electric Toolkit models will be built for three Group brands in Zwickau. All 8,000 employees at Zwickau will be prepared for the production of electric cars and for the handling high-voltage systems as part of various training measures. The Zwickau team will complete around 20,500 days of training by the end of 2020.
