Decent car but ugly body kit  Posted on 17 Jun 2023
spacer

Review
Good:
- Most value for money 2L SUV
- interior much improved compared to earlier foresters
- power is adequate for SG conditions
Bad
- GT edition body kit looks tacky. The whole car becomes a mish-mash of colours with the silver body kit and the black plastic cladding. Looks cheap and tasteless.

It's your quintessential Singaporean SUV, packed with plenty of cabin space and safety systems. Just don't expect it to deliver much when it comes to acceleration.

What I like
It's comfy, really comfy. The Forester offers up a comfortable ride, although you do get the sense that rivals all around will deliver you more engagement and feel through the controls even with this level of comfort.

Good thing is they won't be able to deliver the same sense of space and airiness in the cabin. Rear leg and knee room is amazing.

I don't think there's anything available with this much space for passengers and luggage at this price point.

What I do not like
E-boxer or not, the Forester protests when pushed, and is slow when it isn't being flogged. Don't expect good fuel economy as well.

This Forester Mild Hybrid is a comfortable & spacious SUV that aims towards bigger family. It's a 5 seater but there is a generous amount of leg & head room in this car, no issues having 3 adults at the back. Boot space is pretty decent too. The exterior isn't the eye-catching, sharp design that SUVs nowadays have but Subaru cars always have the rugged looks that suits off-road. Interior wise it has bigger infotainment screen than before that comes with Android Auto & Apple Carplay. Tbh Subaru interior is still leaning towards the traditional side as compared to the fancy and digitalised instrument cluster. Safety wise it has upped a level too because of EyeSight 4.0. Loads of safety features. Comes with 360 degree camera too. This car is just mild hybrid so EV mode will only activate at certain speed or when braking. At least it saves some fuel.

The only downside this car has is the engine, 2L is sufficient but a turbo with it will be much better. While the car isn't full size SUV, I wish there were front sensors since it's a good thing to have.

What I like
- Generous head & leg room
- Decent boot space
- EyeSight 4.0
- 360 degree camera
-Mild Hybrid

What I do not like
- Engine performance not that good
- Interior design can be modernised more
- Lack of front sensors

Subaru's longest mainstay now has a handsome new front, and a host of cabin upgrades, so its competitive pricing is no longer the main thing that will convince you to get one against the many rivals.

What I like
Comfortable enough on the go, and with a mad amount of space in the second row, this Forester is the ideal pick if you're packing loads of cargo, or need space for the children and child seats. It's also a great height so you can simply slide in or out instead of dropping into the seats.

So overall a very practical car for a sensible kinda person.

Dashboard material use is alright, and build quality reasonable enough. Don't push the engine and you should be able to get away in quiet fashion.

What I do not like
But if you want that surge of torque when moving off the lights, you'll have to shop for something else. The engine does not have much to give when pushed, and the CVT will dissuade you from keeping your foot down for long.

Massive windows everywhere also mean you get good all-round visibility, but then you'll also be sacrificing sound insulation from around you.

A mild update for this model year sees the Subaru Forester get new lights, a new grille, and a new Eyesight system and new cabin features.

What I like
Does the new Eyesight system work better? It's hard to tell. The new one works will but so did the previous system.

Still, Subaru states the new car can 'see' across a wider angle, better to spot errant cars and pedestrians.

There's also new hand gesture controls for the air-conditioning, which I couldn't activate at all in the test car. Bummer.

Getting the for the family? (of course you are). space at the back is stupidly generous.

What I do not like
Boxer or non-boxer, this is a lot of car for a small, non-turbo engine. Prepare to dish out some revs wherever you go.

All-wheel drive? Sure, but you will get hit on fuel-economy. There's no winning them all.

Went by to see this e-Boxer in Motor Image recently.

First looks, some changes in the lights design and is fully fitted with LEDs. Car is taller too and equipped with harness body mechanism to prevent side collision impact.

Interior, its flushed in nicely with the console which is intuitive and friendly to use which is ok to be locally fitted. Sunroof is there, only canvas need to manual open. FINALLY, a japanese make that comes with BOTH auto headlights and rain sensor, PLUS both driver and passenger auto seat adjustment. Space is also wider and longer felt too.

Paired with the usual CVT gearbox but is a chain type than a conventional belt type, so as to work well with its powerful boxer engine.

Drive off is a simple task, compared to its predecessor that is still available for sale.

During the drive in SI mode, the car is well behaved and perhaps in mild hybrid over the turbo, the pickup is still adequate but there is still difference though. When in X mode, the car jumps into life and overtakes is so simple and easy, but still prefer X mode with Turbo in XT series.

Features are well equipped in the e-boxer, comes with EyeSight 4.0 which is flushed in the screen than the earlier mounted out and the adaptive cruise and stop control is effective, just simply set how far apart you need between yours and in front, the rest let EyeSight do the job in stopping, braking and continuing the journey.

Blind spot detection is the usual and common whereby it lights up in the wing mirror and dash screen. Lane departure is also useful and pulls you back in lane but at a speed fo 60km minimum.

This SUV is well equipped too, you name it, they have it.

One soundful thing I got to know is pin feature whereby if you forgot your key and need to collect something from your car, can set a 6 digit code to do so, but cannot start the car and drive off.

Overall, with the above and perhaps others that I might have overlooked, this e-boxer is certainly an excellent improvement in gadgets and features over the previous few predecessors.

Its an alternative to conti SUV but a sure get Japanese SUV to consider.

What I like
Intuitive console system (locally fitted but OK)
Lane departure assist
Blind spot assist
EyeSight 4.0 (mounted and flushed)
Pincode feature
Sunroof (only canvas is manual)
Steering headlights (or known as adaptive headlights)
Auto Vehicle Hold
X-Mode, SI-Mode
Radar sensor
BOTH Auto headlight and auto rain sensor
Adaptive Cruise Control with auto braking and moving off
Driver and front passenger auto seat adjustment
360 Camera view

What I do not like
Price (due to COE dated Sept 2022)
No surround sensor as preferrable cause of a large vehicle to prevent knocks

Subaru has a new Forester with an all new front and an all new EyeSight system. It's otherwise your regular Forester through and through. Big and spacious, hard on safety, and with loads of window space for everyone to see out of when you go on road trips.

What I like
Upgraded EyeSight means the Forester can now keep within its lane on top of the adaptive cruise control. There's also supposed to be improved detection of obstacles ahead, so you are more likely to be warned ahead of any potential collisions.

New front also means the Forester now looks a bit neater than before. Very nice! There's a crazy amount of space for all your children at the rear, and all their rubbish even further behind still.

Think of this only as an everyday, family-oriented SUV and you'll be ok.

What I do not like
e-Boxer needs a bit more work. Fuel consumption is not great. You can get 9km/L if you're hard on the accelerator pedal. The system also delivers a lot of revs, and you will still be left trying to keep up with a lot of other regular cars.

Great car, value for money, feature rich. Highly recommended for anyone looking for mid-large size SUV.

What I like
Adaptive cruise control, anti collision braking, auto tailgate, keyless entry.

What I do not like
Cannot get the specified 6.7 milage, averaging 9.1 for me. Sound system speakers not fantastic, especially back speakers very soft can hardly hear.

I have read conflicting reviews about the performance of the eboxer engine so I test drove this to determine which reviews were more accurate. In summary, I think that all the reviews were correct - it depends on which baseline the reviewer was comparing the eboxer Forester to.

Compared to the SJ 2.0 NA Forester that I own, the Eboxer seems to lack oomph and agility. It seems to do that only because it is heavier. The weight plant the vehicle more securely to the ground. I find the acceleration more than adequate and overtaking in city traffic does not pose any problem. I would love to test the overtaking at highway speed though.

This car should be on the list of those who wants to see what hybrids can do without having to worry about the extensive electronics and motors that comes with normal hybrids. It does not save a lot of fuel - at least this is what almost all reviewers agree on. But it is a proper SUV which can handle rough terrain. The ride is quiet especially the very few times it went on full EV mode.

I think drivers of previous generations of NA Foresters will have no issue with the performance of this car once they realised that the ride characteristics is influence more by the weight and not by the power of the engine.

Not I gave a 5-star rating on reliability because I need to tick this. - So I used the current SJ Forester which I own as a reference.

What I like
Eyesight features
Large cabin
Rear A/C outlet (small but important improvement)
Solid build
Long list of features

What I do not like
Apple Carplay is an expensive add-on - need to select the GT kit option
No spare tire - only puncture repair kit
Smaller fuel tank than the non-hybrid - not sure if this would be compensated by the less thirsty engine)

Firstly, the exterior is quite general for a SUV but the GT edition looks better with black spoiler and sporty roof fin and skirtings.
Secondly, the interior is very very spacious for the driver and all passengers. Leg rooms are generous. Front seats both automated with memory functions. Apple car play and Android auto enabled. Center Touch screen large enough though sightly reflective under bright conditions. Cabin drawer might be a bit small. All seats cushion are good and comfortable. Good center console with coin tray provided. 3 nos. USB ports provided. Good for 5 adult size passengers. The rear boot is spacious enough for any 4 mid size lugguage. Come with 12V adapter socket for day use of other equipments like vacuum. The tailgate is also automated.
Thirdly, the drive was good and stable . Tested a fast U turned and the car did not.Rolled much. Power is sufficient though it is mild hybrid unless you are a fast and furious driver. Good for family use. Looking forward to see it's fuel efficiency of 20% Saving as it's oil tank is only 48L . Lots of safety features of Eye sight , ACC, RWB, Blind spot warning etc.

In summary, witb the promotional price, it feels worthy of buying with so much safety festures and user friendly setups. However, was told that Casper Green was no stock. . .

What I like
Apple carplay and Android auto.
Thoughtful coin tray.
Interior with leather feel and spacious.
Memory seats.
Chrome handles.
Display size just nice.
Stable drive with min. roll
Eye sight and other safety features.
Some Fuel saving only as it is mild hybrid.
Knees airbags sys for front passenger and driver.
GT version.
Minimal.blind spots.
Sun/moon roof retractable.

What I do not like
Dash Drawer too small.
Rear USB flap flimsy.
No digital gauges.
Additional cost for GT version. Abt 2.9k.
Door slots pockets small.
No scuff plate for rear trunk bumper.
