Tesla accident repair  Posted on 15 Nov 2023

Review
I'm now into the fourth year of ownership. The Tesla is still my favourite transport-fast, quiet, dependable handling and best in-car audio I have experienced. It's also very economical to run, except for the road tax.
However, last week the inevitable happened. I got into an accident. Yes, all the horror tales about how much it costs to repair an electric car are true. There are only two authorised workshops in Singapore. I sent my car to one of them and got an astronomical estimate. The breakdown included all right front suspension components, the headlight assembly, sensors, 2 rims and one tyre. My regular mechanic who specialises in Porsche, Mercedes and BMW told me he couldn't fix a Tesla, but he pointed me to the best guy outside of the authorised Tesla shops - Edwin Garage. As the electric drive train was not damaged, Edwin fixed the car like any car. The computer in fact thought that the Tesla was in perfect working order. All headlights, sensors, wheels and tyres were checked to be intact. The only suspension component he needed to change was a bent tie rod.
Thanks Edwin. I would like to share the great experience with all other Tesla owners and perspective owners.

The Tesla Model 3 is a game-changer in the electric car market. From the moment you step inside, you can tell that this car is built with innovation and technology in mind. The minimalist interior design is sleek and modern, with a 15-inch touch screen display that controls nearly all of the car's functions.

One of the most impressive things about the Model 3 is its performance. The instant torque of the electric motor provides a thrilling driving experience, and the car can accelerate from 0-60mph in just over 6 seconds. The handling and braking are also exceptional, making the Model 3 a joy to drive on winding roads.

The Model 3 also boasts a range of 400km on a single charge (real world). This means that you can easily take long road trips without the need for frequent charging stops. Additionally, the car's regenerative braking system helps to extend the battery's range even further.

The Model 3 comes with a host of advanced safety features, including automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and a rearview camera. The car also has the ability to park itself, making it easy to maneuver into tight spaces.

Overall, the Tesla Model 3 is a fantastic car that sets a new standard for electric vehicles. The combination of performance, design, and technology make it a must-have for tech and car enthusiasts alike. If you're in the market for an electric car, the Model 3 is definitely worth considering.

What I like
Sleek and modern interior design
15-inch touch screen display controls nearly all car functions
Top-notch materials used in the cabin
Thrilling performance with instant torque and 0-60mph in just over 6 seconds (RWD model)
Exceptional handling and braking
Can get 400km+ a single charge
Regenerative braking system extends battery range
Advanced safety features, including automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning
Self-parking capability

What I do not like
Price is relatively high compared to traditional gas-powered cars (PARF also high means get back around $30K. BYD, Hyundai, KIA, PARF is lesser @ end of 10 years.)
Charging infrastructure may not be as widespread in some areas (getting better liao !)
Some people may miss the traditional car buying experience (Get ahead with the times, grand pa)
FSD = paid options.

Whole new driving experience. Takes a year to get use to all the functions and driving style. This isn't just a car from point to point, it's a theatre, a sport car, a family car, a place to take power naps without dying from CO2 poisoning, my work is hectic. Always feared dying in my estima when taking short naps. Charging not an issue at all. So many chargers around now compared to 2021. JB can charge now. The software is more powerful than anyone can imagine. There is a lot more and resale demand is high. Best $ value per bhp. Its a drivers car. Connectivity with Andriod and Apple, Netflix, Maps, Spotify, Disney. Felt like iphone 1 in 2010. This is just the beginning of a long term ownership. No longer worry about GPS in countries that lease Tesla for self drive holidays.

The 2022 Tesla Model 3 RWD, Tesla's entry level car, costs $224,655 (inclusive of Cat B COE), which is the price range of the Mercedes C and E class, BMW 3 series and Audi A4, all made by well established German car companies. After owning the Tesla Model 3 for almost a year and also a Merc E200, here's why I prefer the Model 3. To start, the exterior looks sporty while looking classy. The always on lamps on the headlights makes the car look like it has eyes. The front of the car also looks quite fierce, maybe that's why more people give way to me when driving the Model 3 compared to my E200. The design of the door handles are also unique, if you show it to any tech savvy person, they'll be able to identify that it came from a Tesla. Going inside the car, the first thing that you'll notice is the massive 15" Display on the dash, which is where most functions of the car is controlled from. Right below it is 2 wireless changing pads for you and your passenger's phones. The steering wheel and seats in the car are also heated and lined with stain resistant vegan leather, however to get the seats in the iconic white colour, it'll cost extra. Front passenger and rear passenger leg room is okay but not great. The rear seats are quite low, so when taller passengers are seated, their legs are bent upwards, a bit like in a squatting position. When on the road, the road noise is slightly louder than in my E200 but still much quieter than in my old Honda Vezel, as its electric and the front windows are actually double glazed, blocking out noise better. The handling of the car is also great, thanks to the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres that came with the car and the car's low CG as the heavy battery pack is mounted beneath the car's flooring. The acceleration is also great, doing 0-100km/h in 6.1s, however the acceleration gets slightly slower as the battery % Gets lower, something German EVs like the Mercedes EQS or Porsche Taycan don't suffer from, according to other motoring journalists. The claimed range is 491km, however I get about 440km on a full charge. When cruising on the roads, you can also turn on autopilot, which comes with all Teslas, making the drive more relaxing. FSD is also purchasable for $11500 in the Tesla app.

What I like
Currently, you can get $45k off the ARF payable thanks to the government's push to EVs. The car's infotainment system is also great, with games and gimmicks like 'fart mode' and a lightshow. The sound system, which is tuneable using the screen, sounds better than my E200's sound system. You can also browse the web using the screen. The car's autopilot cameras also double as a 360 dashcam, eliminating the need of having to buy 1. When parked and if turned on, sentry mode can also help record when cars or people get close to the car, thus making it easier for insurance claims or police reports if the car gets damaged or vandalised when parked. The car also has dog mode, which keeps the A/C cool when the car is locked and the owner is away, might come in handy if a pet owner needs to leave their pet in the car while they run a quick errand. The car has 2 boots, 1 in the front and another in the back, as it doesn't have an engine or much electrical components in the front, unlike some other EVs. The front boot/frunk is also separate from the cabin, so if you happen to have any pungent smelling objects or food that you need to carry around, like durian, you need not worry of how to clear the smell from the cabin. The car doesn't come with a spare tyre so there is a large bin area underfloor bin area in the boot, where you can store stuff, i store my car cleaning supplies in there. The Tesla Model 3 is also one of the safest cars in the world, thanks to its in built safety systems and sensors. Additionally, in the event of a crash, as there isn't anything much under the bonnet, the space can serve as a large crumple zone, hopefully keeping the passengers in the car safe. In the event of a side collision, as the battery pack is part of the car's structure, so you wont be crushed inside the car. Teslas also have access to the supercharger network, currently only useable by Tesla cars, which can charge the car from 0-100% in an hour or less. I also save a lot from paying for petrol as electricity is very cheap, especially if you charge at home and sometimes it might even be free at certain malls or places like IKEA. I can also use the Tesla app on my phone to lock/unlock the car, precondition the A/C, open the front/rear boot and more, so I need not carry a physical car key with me too. The car also gets free frequent over the air software updates which is good.

What I do not like
In order to use functions like music/video streaming, karaoke, internet browser, premium connectivity is required which costs $16.99 a month, which some might expect to come for free with the car since you're paying so much for it. You need to pay $5800 for enhanced auto pilot or $11500 for full self driving, even though the car already comes with the ability and equipment needed for this. As the car doesn't come with a spare wheel, if I get a flat tyre, instead of changing it myself at the side of the road, i'll have to call a tow truck to tow it to a workshop to get it fixed before i can drive again. When jacking the car up, you'll also need special jack pads as the under carriage of the car is built different from most other cars and might get damaged if you didn't use the special jack pads, which also doesn't come with the car so you'll have to hope the workshop you went to already have them and that there are aware that they need them to jack up Teslas without causing damage. Although the build quality of the car is better than the older Model 3s, which had badly fitted body panels resulting in panel gaps, mine still has a small panel gap. Cars made by the Germans definitely have better build quality than Tesla cars. As most functions of the car is controlled by the touchscreen, it might be dangerous to have to use it while driving to turn something on/off and the voice control on the car may not always work perfectly. The speedometer is on the top right corner of the screen, instead of right in front of the steering wheel, which will need some getting used to for new drivers and i feel that it also takes my eyes off the road momentarily whenever i check my speed while approaching speed cameras, which can be a dangerous distraction.

A very good car but watch out for the road tax  Posted on 29 Oct 2022

I was among the first to join the queue when Tesla opens for bookings in Singapore. I have owned my model 3 for close to a year and am very pleased with it, particularly in view of the rapidly escalating petrol prices. One catch however is the road tax. The 2nd year road tax bill is $3190. This is for a Standard Range Plus. The early model 3s are specified at 239KW, which exceeds both the 100KW and 230KW tax breaks. The tax penalty is heavy. Latest model 3s are specified at 208KW. The yearly road tax is a much more reasonable $2,100. SGcarmart still mistakenly quotes the yearly road tax at $1835. This is very misleading.
The car is really as good as what everybody says it is - fast, quiet and comfortable, but it does exude a smarter than thou personality. An example is the adaptive cruise control. It refused to be turned on until it was fully trained through roadside features, and in my case, it was beyond 2 months into ownership. The reason I discovered was that it thought the road side was on the right side of the car, like in US or Europe. So it kept insisting in looking at road dividers and that didn't provide much education.
Tesla's support is excellent if one manages to get through to its call centres. Their app or website are otherwise one way streets - from Tesla to you e. G. Time to update your software. Don't try to ask a question e.G. What is the power rating? A robot will defeat you.

Tesla Model 3 is a good car if your drive involves traffic jams daily.

If you do highway driving or longer distances, that's where the car falls apart. Road noise is unbearable, wind noise is intrusive, rattles will bother everyone.

Range is only 300km when used in town for the Performance variant (used till 10% Charge)

Avoid this car if you have a larger budget..

What I like
Acceleration. For the money, best acceleration for your buck

What I do not like
Road noise
Range in town driving
Charge times are still too slow
Poor built quality
Desperately needs a HUD

The only things going for it are the low selling price (vs performance you get).

Other than the drive train, I would say that the car is poorly built.

Poor road holding, tyre and road noise is apparent. Poor sound insulation. Wind noise at over 80km/hr.

Because of the way its built, the risk of the car being un-drivable is high if the centre screen or console should encounter a LCD display issue.

What I like
Power train
Power delivery
Sound system
In Car Entertainment

What I do not like
Poor ride quality
Tire noise and road noise
Car feels bottom heavy but top light
Over reliant on the screen to control everything
If centre screen dies, the entire car is incapacitated

It's a piece of tech, like getting the brand new phone. Not all features may work, slight learning curve, but makes you think why didn't other cars do this in the first place

Tesla Model 3 is the most amazing car I have ever driven, it beats my old Lamborghini Gallardo in both acceleration and handling. The interior takes you into the future and you feel like sitting in a spaceship going at warp speed. The soft but ergonomic leather seats are a dream and the features (Netflix, YouTube and the Dolby surround) are not matched even by the most luxurious cars out there. The 4-wheel drive and low point of gravity makes the car handle like any supercar out there and best of all - the cost of electric charging makes me save at least 75% Compared to my old petrol car.

What I like
- Acceleration
- Handling
- Relative low cost

What I do not like
- Nothing

We have had this car for 3 weeks. It has been trouble free, fast and fun. The simplistic interior is fantastic. We have also taken two long trips in the car, not an issue at all. Tech is outstanding.

Cons are Tesla has not been building vehicles for 100 years and it shows. It has more road noise than it should, fit and finish lacks versus other manufacturers.

Others have a long way to go to match Tesla in electric cars, Tesla has a short way to go to match others in building CARS.

The Tesla has a bit more wind noise and you feel rough roads a bit more than our 2013 Lexus ES.

The interior of this car is not as nice as similarly priced luxury cars at this price point. The fit and finish isn't quite as good as a Mercedez, Lexus, BMW or Audi as far as exterior and interior. However, the driving functionality and infotainment system is amazing. After a few days driving you quickly forget about small mis-alignments only visible if you go over your car with a fine tooth comb.

With the Tesla you are paying for the drivetrain tech/battery and infotainment system tech, free OTA updates etc. These things are far superior to Mercedes and BMW ICE cars at a similar price point IMO.

There's honestly nothing like this car. It puts a smile on my face every day I drive it. Seriously, just go test drive one. I used to be skeptical, but I think all of my cars from now on will be Teslas.

The instant torque and regenerative braking make this thing handle like a supercar. The slowest one goes 0-60 as quick as a stock muscle car. It's legitimately insane. If you get the Performance version, it's basically the quickest car under $200k.

Did I mention the acceleration? Because wow.
