Good looking car, but too upmarket for the mass market  Posted on 08 Jul 2022

Saw this at the BYD showroom. Impressive exterior looks. Unrecognisable as a BYD. Funky interior - infotainment screen is rotatable, buyers of this car will have their Atto 3 with wireless carplay and wireless android auto in Q4, done via software updates or what they term as over the air updates, similar to Tesla and the likes. Navigation will also be added at a later date. These are features even some base model conti cars are not equipped with for the same value.

Car looks highly interesting albeit a bit too funky for my liking. But no doubt, it is feature packed - sunroof, electric tailgate, adaptive cruise control with stop & go, safety features like your lane keeping, lane departure warning. At $178,888, this is a steal if you consider the premium you are paying for Cat B COE now.

To sum it up, good car but launched at the wrong time. If COE was at $30K, I say this is the one to convert me to an EV. I'll wait for now.

Dear BYD if you're reading this, do consider bringing in some models for the mass market car buyers like myself.

God knows how BYD managed to make something as good as the Atto 3 after producing the monstrosity known as the BYD E6. Everything that the BYD E6 fails at, the Atto3 manages to correct, by a country mile.

Granted there is a 30k price difference between the 2 cars. However I would so far as to say that it feels more like a 300k price difference. What an exaggeration you might say but let me explain why.

Lets start off from the exterior. The Atto 3 clearly knocks it out of the park in this regard. The looks are futuristic, clean and sharp. In a way that not many SUVs from even Audi can boast about nowadays. Yes, the Atto 3 does look that good in real life. Which makes me question once again how did they manage to get the E6 so wrong.

Next is the interior. Yes, the design is certainly divisive. Personally to me I think it looks ok, but I know of many people who were visibly repulsed the moment the car opened its doors. You will have to view the car to know what I mean. It truly is divisive. However, it is good where it counts. The build quality is pretty awesome, with a feeling of solidity. The use of soft touch materials and premium leather also brings a really upmarket feeling to the cabin.

I am talking BMW - beating standards of interior quality. The seats for example are a mile ahead from seats in equivalent BMW models. You know the kind of BMWs with absolutely horrid Dakota leather which make your back hurt after just 30 mins of driving?

When it comes to the driving experience, this is where the Atto 3 started to let me down. The quoted circa 200bhp is certainly not accurate as at no point did the car feel remotely punchy. Apparently, bhp ratings are extremely generous in China where BYD cars are made. I suggest that the company uses measuring techniques adopted by the Germans instead.

Other than power, handling is decent and ride quality is smooth and pleasant.

All in all, the BYD Atto 3 is a mighty fine car. If you can ignore the absolutely out of whack power figure, it is possibly one of the best cars at this price range.

Certainly miles better than the ahem, E6.

What I like
- Well conceived exterior design
- Spacious and high-rent interior
- Great ride

What I do not like
- Massively out of whack power rating
- Not much at all

Don't be fooled by the photos, this new Atto 3 is larger than they suggest. But does the abilities of this new all-electric SUV live up to its physical dimensions?

What I like
There's good space for all on the inside, and the ride quality is actually very good. Its soft and supple in a pleasing manner, allowing you to ride over all the humps that are becoming so common here in Singapore.

Forget about making jokes about Chinese-made cars here. This Atto 3 comes with build quality that will give older manufacturers something to think about.

Power is also decent. It's not as fast as what you might think of a 200bhp car, and there's not much of the electric torque everyone is all excited about, but that makes the Atto 3 a car that's very easy to get into and just drive, even without careful footwork.

What I do not like
The styling is definitely going to catch curious stares. Especially if you get yours in the greenish-blue exterior.

But on the inside is where people will really scratch their heads. There's strange curves all over the dashboard, weird door handles, funny strings in the doors for your kids to irritate you, etc.

And there's also a rotating screen in here, which ok, all the kids are now watching tik tok on vertical screen and it gives you something to do while you're charging your car, but it's a curious feature that i think many will forget about after two days.

I viewed and tested this car, it is spacious for both front and back seat.

A lot quieter than its competitors, pickup wise though is not the best, it is acceptable.

What I like
Sleek design.
Good road holding.
Spacious front and back seats.
impressive over 400KM range.
electric tail gate.

What I do not like
Some unnecessary artistical interior design (such as the red strings).
No keyless entry (asked and confirmed by sales person).
