Like Shell's highly valued technical partnership with Scuderia Ferrari, perhaps a collaboration of equal prominence would be ExxonMobil and the McLaren-Mercedes Formula One team.
The 2014 season sees ExxonMobil and McLaren celebrate 20 years of technology partnership - a period in which they have earned 78 victories through 334 races.
Along with other lubricants and oils from Mobil 1, ExxonMobil has supplied high-performance race formulation fuel and trackside expertise to the McLaren team during the course of their collaboration.
Fuel consumption is a critical factor as fuel loads have been reduced by around 35 percent to 100kg per race, and ExxonMobil's team of scientists have developed a completely new fuel - engineered at molecular level to ensure full conformity with FIA specifications.
For the current season, the partners have worked extra hard to ensure that the new 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid power units are as powerful and efficient as possible. The new and custom fuel for the McLaren-Mercedes MP4-29 has been exceeding expectations throughout testing and the early races.
The team from ExxonMobil have formulated a brand new fuel that would minimise the risk of engine knock (detonation) to help extract maximum power from the available fuel. Minimising engine knock is critical for two reasons. Firstly, because it can potentially lead to catastrophic engine failure which - in a season where teams are restricted to five power units - is of vital importance.
The second major reason relates to the team's ability to improve engine performance and ensure that by minimising knock, they gain as much power as possible from their fuel load.
