Italian racing driver, Alessandro Zanardi returned to Brands Hatch, U.K. since the 2012 Paralympic Games, as a BMW works driver - behind the wheel of a BMW Z4 GT3 (above) entered by ROAL Motorsport.
Zanardi finished fifth overall in the second round of the 2014 Blancpain Sprint Series - despite starting from 17th. Wearing prosthetic legs, Zanardi had to battle the grid in addition to keeping his calm and composure for most part of the race.
The two hour-long races were held in impeccable weather conditions and a start from sixth on the grid gave the Italian hope for a good result during qualifying. However, contact on the first lap, a spin on the 22nd lap and a number of pit stops to deal with lose bodywork saw him clinching a best of 17th place.
The honour of being the highest placed BMW car went to the BMW Z4 GT3 of BMW Sports Trophy Team Brazil at the hands of Sergio Jimenez and Caca Bueno - who finished third in both races. Usually two drivers share each car, but the regulations allow handicapped drivers like Zanardi, who had both his legs amputated, or category Bronze drivers over the age of 30 to compete by themselves.
