Following the hugely popular BMW 1 Series Coupe, of which 150,000 examples have been sold worldwide, the new 2 Series aims to raise the bar in the premium compact segment. More than a mere badge re-designation, the 2 Series now has a redesigned sheet metal and greater performance to distinguish itself from the 1 Series.

Launched at the media and customer event is the 220i Coupe, which has a 2.0-litre in-line four-cylinder engine underneath its hood. With an output of 184bhp and 270Nm of torque, the 220i is capable of completing the century sprint in seven seconds flat.
Compared to the 1 Series Coupe, there is an increase in maximum power output of 18 percent and 35 percent more torque from as low as 1,250rpm. As a result, the 220i Coupe shaves 2.2 seconds off the 0-100km/h acceleration time of its predecessor.
On top of dynamic performance, the new car achieves 23 percent better fuel efficiency with a claimed figure of 16.7km/L. CO2 emission has also been reduced by 23 percent to 139g/km.
The 220i Coupe will come with an eight-speed sport automatic gearbox with Launch Control function. Driving Experience Control, which allows three levels of car setup - 'Comfort', 'Sport' and 'Eco Pro' - is also fitted as standard.
In the cockpit, the 220i retains the premium ambience that is found in other BMW cars. Special attention, too, has been paid to ensure driving pleasure. Compared to the 1 Series Coupe, the new car has 6mm more headroom and 21mm more legroom, as well as a wider Easy Entry function with 11mm more allowance than before.
Prices for the BMW 220i Coupe start from $199,800 (including COE) at press time.
