With more than 730,000 units of the BMW X1 sold worldwide since its launch, it's hard to deny that this Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) has blazed the trail in the premium compact segment. And now, the second generation model is back - comprehensively re-engineered.
Thanks to BMW's intelligent and versatile UKL platform, the new model is actually 15mm shorter than its predecessor but has grown 23mm wider and 53mm taller, which has helped increase interior space.
Serving its purpose as a SAV even further, the car's cargo area has increased by a whopping 85 litres to 505 litres. Folding down the back seats also allows load capacity to be expanded to as much as 1,550 litres.
Rugged proportions, a powerful stance and dynamic lines lend the new X1 a commanding presence and highlight its status as the youngest member of the BMW X model family, and this further heightens its appeal to the young and trendy.
Propelling the new X1 is a new engine family. At launch, they comprise of four-cylinder petrol engines, starting with 192bhp in the xDrive20i and sDrive20i as well as a 231bhp motor in the xDrive25i. Four-pot diesel models include the sDrive18d with 150bhp, the xDrive20d with 190bhp and the xDrive25d with 231bhp. In addition, the model range is scheduled to be joined by the sDrive18i and sDrive16d variants powered by three-cylinder engines from November 2015.
Driving experience has also been enhanced as the new X1 comes with adjustable dampers in combination with an optional Driver Experience Control function that enables drivers to choose between Sport and Comfort suspension settings, along with Sport, Comfort and Eco Pro driving modes for the very first time.
Another first for the new car is that of being the first X model to feature a front-wheel drive, transverse-mounted engine layout in its sDrive variants. The new X1 is expected to roll into Singapore in the fourth quarter of the year.
