The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class has arrived in Singapore, following a launch event held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on 29th November. The latest version of Mercedes-Benz's flagship sedan comes with comprehensive new features such a new, highly-efficient engine, as well as Intelligent Drive, which takes another step towards autonomous driving.

The S320L and S450L will be offered on sale first, with other variants set to join the range at a later date
A completely new engine has been introduced in the S560L, which features a 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 petrol that produces 469bhp and 700Nm of torque. This new powerplant comes with cylinder deactivation technology, with four of the eight engine cylinders being able to be deactivated under partial load. As a result, Mercedes-Benz claims that the unit is one of the most efficient V8 engines in the world, emitting just 186g/km of CO2 emissions, and offering an average fuel consumption figure of 12.2km/L.

The same engine is also found in the high-performance AMG S 63 version, and the unit takes the place of the outgoing 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine in the previous version. In this form, the 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 has been tuned to produce 612bhp and 900Nm of torque, offering superior performance with significantly improved efficiency. Other variants of the S-Class available at launch are the S320L and S450L, which replaces the outgoing S400L and now boasts a 3.0-litre bi-turbo V6 putting out 367bhp and 500Nm of torque. The S450L also receives a 9G-TRONIC gearbox in place of its former 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission.

Among the key improvements of the updated S-Class include the addition of Intelligent Drive, which enables the flagship premium luxury sedan to take a major step towards autonomous driving. The Active Steer Assist now provides an even more comfortable support for the driver to keep a safe distance and steer. The speed is now adjusted automatically ahead of curves and junctions, and this is complemented by the functions of the Active Emergency Stop Assist.

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class will be available in S320L and S450L variants at launch, with the S560L and AMG S 63 set to join the lineup at a later date.
