The international dynamic presentation of the all new Skoda Scala took place in Split, Croatia.
The word 'Scala' comes from Latin and means 'stairs', 'ladder' or 'scale', and highlights the way forward for the brand as it aims high with its new model.
By incorporating new technology, an emotive design, a high degree of functionality and state-of-the-art connectivity, the new Scala looks to set new benchmarks in the compact segment. The Scala showcases the next stage of development in Skoda's new design language that the brand has dubbed 'Simply Surprising'.
With its sharp lines, defined surfaces and perfect proportions, the Scala delivers a dynamic and emotive design. The Scala is also the first Skoda production model to mark its bold identity by bearing 'Skoda' in block lettering on its tailgate.
The new Scala is the first Skoda based on Volkswagen Group's MQB A0 platform. However, comprehensive adjustments have been made to deliver compact external dimensions yet an extremely spacious interior, including using the longest possible wheelbase and rear overhang. The car measures 4,362mm long, 1,793mm wide, and 1,471mm high, and has a 2,649mm wheelbase.
The interior of the Scala takes inspiration from the Vision RS concept study.
The cabin features a free-standing 9.2-inch infotainment display positioned high up in the driver's field of vision, and is framed by a design line echoing the contours of the bonnet.
The soft-foam surfaces that line the instrument panel and door trims feature large-scale design textures and a specific new grain. This emulates crystalline structures and will define the Skoda brand's style in future.
Ambient lighting with a choice of white or red light as well as warm hues and contrasting stitching for the seat upholstery ensure a pleasant sense of space in the Scala. In typical Skoda style, the Scala also has one of the largest boots in its segment, with a capacity of 467 litres.
Globally, the Skoda Scala is offered with three engine choices - a 114bhp 1.0-litre TSI engine, a 148bhp 1.5-litre TSI engine, as well as a 114bhp 1.6-litre TDI engine.
While the engine specifications for Singapore is still unconfirmed, expect either or both the petrol engines to be offered, paired to a seven-speed DSG gearbox. Both Style and Ambition trim variants are expected to be offered in Singapore. Skoda Singapore expects the Scala to arrive here mid-2020, although the company can only confirm exactly when later this year.
