Mercedes-AMG hosted the regional launch of the GT 4-Door Coupe at Sepang International Circuit on 3 May 2019.
The official unveil of the marque's latest four-door coupe, in GT 63 S 4MATIC+ guise, was held at Turn 15, the last corner of the 5.54km race circuit.
It was accompanied with the current stable of Mercedes-AMG models, such as the C43, as well as the CLS53 and E53.
It can be argued that Mercedes-Benz modernised the idea of the four-door coupe with the CLS-Class. Now, the GT 4-Door further proves Mercedes' expertise in creating highly desirable sedans with a coupe-like silhouette.
While the current cream of the crop CLS53 will compete with the likes of the BMW M6 Gran Coupe and the Audi RS7, this AMG GT 4-Door Coupe will be on the same level playing field as the Porsche Panamera Turbo.
While aptly named as the four-door coupe version of the two-door AMG GT Coupe, they are underpinned by different platforms. The GT 4-Door Coupe is instead based on Mercedes' Modular Rear-wheel drive Architecture (MRA) platform, also used on the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
Still, it shares many similarities to the AMG GT Coupe, whilst adapting the design philosophy of Sensual Purity.
The Panamericana grille up front - only found on top-end AMG cars - and its unique head and taillights further marks its distinction from the CLS.
On the inside, it draws more inspiration from the Mercedes-AMG GT, with the centre console of the new AMG GT 4-Door representing a further special feature that is also found in the Coupe.
A new and unique feature comes in the form of the colour display buttons, integrated into the distinctive and tailor-made trim element, for the integral display and functions. With TFT technology, the display buttons use coloured, intuitively comprehensible symbols and are easy to operate with just a small tap of the finger.
And while the CLS-Class gains a centre-row seat, the GT 4-Door is a focused four-seat grand tourer - but can be specified to have a full three-seat rear bench if required.
Of course, the main similarity to the AMG GT Coupe, and all AMGs in particular, would be its powerplant. A thumping twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 will power the GT 63 S 4-Door, pumping out 621bhp and 900Nm of torque to all four wheels. This translates to a blistering century sprint time of 3.2 seconds.
Another powertrain option comes in the form of the GT 53, powered by a turbocharged straight-six that pushes out 422bhp and 520Nm of torque.
While not as hot on its feet as the GT 63 S, the GT 53 has EQ Boost - Mercedes' 48V mild hybrid system. This gives the four-door GT 53 an additional boost of electric torque of up to 250Nm.
The latest Mercedes four-door coupe is expected to arrive in Singapore in the third quarter of 2019. It will be available in two variants - the GT 63 S and the GT 53. There is no indicative pricing for the GT 4-Door models planned for Singapore as of press time.
