It's not everyday that you get to visit a beautiful place like Napa Valley. Better still, it's a rare experience to head to the said location to attend an event of a carmaker to witness the launch of several captivating cars. But Bentley did just that.
Continental GT V8 and GT V8 Convertible
The English marque is launching its luxury grand tourer - the Continental GT V8 and the GT V8 Convertible.
At launch, the third generation model is equipped with a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 powerplant that is good for 542bhp and a whopping 770Nm of twisting force. The powerplant is mated to a dual-clutch eight-speed autobox.
Thus, the short century sprint timing comes across as no surprise. Mash the right pedal and the Coupe will arrive at the 100km/h mark in just four seconds flat before hitting a top speed of 318km/h. The Convertible, on the other hand, will take 4.1 seconds to complete the century sprint.
According to Bentley, this will be accompanied by a characterful exhaust note often associated with V8 engines. However, an in-depth test drive tomorrow will be needed to find just how true this claim is.
Also essential for the test drive is to find out how the cylinder deactivation works. The engine is capable of deactivating four of its cylinders in suitable conditions, which helps to complement efficiency without compromising its performance.
Design wise, the Continental GT V8 is nothing short of desirable, thanks to their bold lines and curvy waistlines that represent works of art. Both models feature 20-inch 10-spoke painted alloy shoes, but there’s an option of to choose from nine other designs that measure up to 22-inch.
The Convertible, obviously, differs from its Coupe brethren with its ability to drop its top in just 19 seconds, with speeds of up to 50km/h, with a touch of a button on the centre console.
The cabin is just as impressive, as you would expect from a carmaker like Bentley. A 12.3-inch touchscreen takes centre stage while a mixture of high-quality opulent leather and finely treated wood make up most of the interior.
The Continental GT V8 is expected to arrive in Singapore in the second half of 2020.
Bentayga Plug-in Hybrid
As if the mouth-watering Continental GT V8 wasn’t enough, Bentley also revealed the Bentayga Plug-in Hybrid, the carmaker’s first hybrid vehicle.
Based on the MLB-evo platform that also underpins the Audi Q7, Lamborghini Urus and the Porsche Cayenne, two power sources drive this luxury SUV – an electric motor and a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine
Combined, the two sources provide an impressive 443bhp and 700Nm of torque from the word go, allowing the Hybrid to comfortably reach 100km/h in 5.5 seconds.
The battery takes a good seven and a half hours to be fully charged from a household socket but this time can be reduced to two and half hours with a fast charger.
All-wheel drive is standard, with four on-road modes - Sport, Bentley, Comfort and Custom. A separate set of modes to manage the electrified powertrain is also available.
On the outside, only hybrid monikers and the vehicle charge point differentiate this Hybrid from the regular Bentayga. On first glance, the cabin seems to be relatively similar to its siblings as well.
As you would imagine, attention to detail here is impeccable, with a perfect blend of suave leather and polished surfaces.
Unfortuntately, there are currently no plans for the Bentayga Hybrid for the Asia Pacific region yet.
