The speakerless 3D immersive audio system by Continental and Sennheiser achieves excellent acoustics by exciting surfaces inside the vehicle to produce sound.

Technology company Continental and audio specialist Sennheiser will present a speakerless audio system at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020.

Specially developed actuators will produce sound by exciting existing surfaces throughout the car's interior
The two partners are integrating Sennheiser's patented AMBEO 3D audio technology with Continental's Ac2ated Sound system to bypass conventional speaker technology altogether and instead produce sound by exciting select surfaces in the vehicle's interior.

The concept is capable of achieving 3D sound reproduction, enveloping passengers in an incredibly detailed and vivid soundscape and lets them enjoy their in-car entertainment to the fullest.

Inspired by the technology of classical string instruments, which use their wooden body as a resonance chamber, the new system utilises specially developed actuators to excite specific surfaces in the vehicle interior. The result is an extremely natural sound experience for the occupants, who feel as if they are sitting in a concert hall surrounded by sound. By using already existing surfaces, Ac2ated Sound is also more efficient in saving space than conventional speaker systems, and can achieve a weight reduction of between 75% and 90%.

Both firms foresee that the invisible audio technology will give vehicle designers and manufacturers the freedom to do more with an automobile's interior, as they no longer need to account for large speaker faces taking up valuable space.
