Volkswagen has presented the Nivus, a crossover developed in South America and set for initial launch on the Brazilian market.
The vehicle will also be available in Argentina later this year with other South American markets following suit in 2021. The new model will be launched internationally along with an European version in the near future.
The new VW Play infotainment system features a high resolution 10-inch screen, along with touch-sensitive, anti-scratch and 'virtual buttons'.
VW Play also offers an integrated Cognitive Manual, the capability to read virtually all media formats, excellent audio quality and smartphone connectivity with both Android Auto and Apple Carplay, spearheading the Nivus' position as the first 'smart car' made in Latin America.
The Nivus also features the Active Info Display and can be controlled with the new steering wheel which is also used in the new Golf. A multitude of advanced driver assistance systems are present in the new Nivus including the Fatigue Detector, Isofix and top-tether for child seats, Electronic Stability Control, Hill Hold Assist, and rearview camera amongst others.
The Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is one of the Nivus' most advanced features. The ACC system maintains a speed set by the driver and adapts the speed to the traffic situation ahead by braking and accelerating within the system limits. It is the only model in the compact segment in Brazil to come with it as standard. The Nivus is also equipped with the City Emergency Braking which automatically initiates an emergency stop to mitigate the severity of any collision when the radar sensor identifies an impending collision.
Assembled using the versatile Modular Transverse Matrix platform which allows high construction flexibility, the Nivus offers ideal interior space to carry up to five occupants comfortably.
The luggage compartment of the Nivus rivals the compact SUVs in the Brazillian market with a 415-litre capacity. This is possible with the longer overhang thanks to the design of the coupe-style body. The trunk lid can be opened through one of VW Play's 'virtual buttons'.
High performance, low fuel consumption and driving pleasure are the main characteristics of the Nivus' powertrain. The fuel efficient three-cylinder 200 TSI engine with direct fuel injection is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and delivers 126bhp of peak power and 200Nm of torque when fueled with ethanol. The 200 TSI engine is manufactured in the Sao Carlos SP plant and equipped in many Volkswagen models such as the Polo, Virtus, and T-Cross with excellent customer satisfaction.
