BMW unveils the all new second generation 4 Series Coupe, delivering class-leading performance, handling and sporty styling.

03 Jun 2020 | International News : Germany

BMW has unveiled the all new second generation 4 Series Coupe. The first 4 Series Coupe was launched in 2014, delivering both stunning performance and supreme handling capabilities. The new model gets a sleek and distinctive new exterior design, a high quality interior, upgraded driver assistance technologies and even greater efficiencies from the introduction of mild hybrid technology.

Mild hybrid technology, the latest weight-saving chassis technology and the first BMW to be available with the specialised M Sport Pro package, form part of the offering in the all new BMW 4 Series Coupe that is set to raise the standard in the premium midsize segment.

The M Sport Pro package is available for the first time, adding features such as a rear spoiler
At market launch in October 2020, the BMW M440i xDrive Coupe, powered by a 369bhp six-cylinder in-line petrol engine, will take its place at the top of the range. It will be joined initially by a pair of four-cylinder petrol engines and a four-cylinder diesel.

The plan is then for two six-cylinder in-line diesel engines to be added to the lineup in March 2021, and the more powerful of these two units will be fitted in another BMW M model. The new BMW 4 Series Coupe will be built at BMW Plant Dingolfing.

The BMW 4 Series Coupe two-door model is also the first BMW to be made available with the new M Sport Pro package. This option includes all the elements of the M Sport model, and adds the Sprint function for additional bursts of speed and a sporty engine soundtrack in the cabin when Sport mode is activated. In addition, the M Sport brakes are featured on the BMW 420i Coupe, BMW 420d Coupe and BMW 420d xDrive Coupe, as well as 19-inch M light-alloy wheels, a rear spoiler in High-gloss Black, BMW Individual High-gloss Shadowline trim with extended features and BMW Individual lights Shadowline and M seat belts.

The all new 4 Series Coupe has revamped a range of measures to optimise driving dynamics
As with all BMW models from 2020 onwards, mild hybrid technology is included for the six-cylinder in-line petrol engine and all diesel engines. This helps to sharpen response and optimise efficiency through a 48V starter-generator boosting the combustion engine with an extra 11bhp. All diesel engines will also have two-stage turbocharging.

All model variants now come standard an eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The optional eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission includes a new Sprint function for instantaneous and dynamic acceleration manoeuvres. BMW xDrive is available for two model variants from launch and four variants from March 2021.

The standard and M Sport suspension each incorporate specially tuned lift-related dampers. Customers can also opt for Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers. Variable sport steering is included with the two optional suspension variants. The new BMW 4 Series Coupe rides as standard on 17-inch light-alloy wheels. The standard equipment roster for the new BMW M440i xDrive Coupe and new BMW M440d xDrive Coupe features 18-inch M light-alloy wheels and an M Sport differential with electronically controlled, fully variable locking function in the rear differential.

The body of the 4 Series Coupe has been carefully sculpted to cheat wind with a low Cd of 0.25
The aerodynamic efficiency of the new 4 Series Coupe sees a noticeable improvement from a previous Cd of 0.29 to a Cd of 0.25 for the new 430i Coupe. An almost completely sealed underbody, improved air flap control and numerous other measures have led to a reduction in drag, reflected in a Cd as low as 0.25 for the BMW 420d Coupe.

The extra 23mm of track width at the rear axle compared with the new BMW 3 Series Saloon, 50:50 weight distribution and a centre of gravity that is 21mm lower than the Saloon significantly aid agility.

The weight-minimising design of the BMW 4 Series Coupe's body and chassis components feature an intelligent mix of steels and alloys to minimise vehicle weight and deliver enhanced body rigidity and crash safety. Underneath, the car uses an engine side member made from extruded aluminium profiles and die-cast aluminium spring struts, while the exterior features an aluminium bonnet, front side panels and doors. A material made from natural fibres is used for the bootlid lining. The new BMW 4 Series Coupe is also equipped as standard with an active bonnet system to optimise pedestrian protection.

A premium driver-focused cockpit is the focus of the new 4 Series Coupe's interior design
Newly developed front sport seats are standard, featuring contoured side bolsters to provide maximum support during hard cornering. All models also include front-seat heating as standard, and electrically adjustable sports seats including memory function are available for customers who choose to upgrade to the Comfort Plus package.

Vernasca leather trim comes in a choice of five colours and includes special decorative quilting and seam patterns. Extended BMW Individual Merino leather trim and BMW Individual full leather trim are also available for M Sport Pro Edition models, as well as BMW M440i xDrive Coupe and BMW M440d xDrive Coupe. LED ambient lighting is standard across the range.

The standard and optional driver assistance systems in the new BMW 4 Series Coupe have undergone a major upgrade over the outgoing model. They process camera images and the data gathered by ultrasonic and radar sensors to monitor the vehicle's surroundings to warn of potential hazards and to minimise the risk of an accident with corrective braking or steering inputs.

With the inclusion of BMW Operating System 7.0 in the new BMW 4 Series Coupe, individually configurable display content and intelligent connectivity underpin seamless interaction between driver and vehicle. The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional also offers a fully digital screen grouping, comprising a high-resolution 12.3-inch instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and a 10.25-inch Central Control Display.
