Lamborghini celebrates World Bee Day with its 600,000 bees and new 'techno-hive'

Lamborghini, with its native bee population of around 600,000, celebrates the United Nation’s World Bee Day on 20 May with a new ‘technological beehive’. Famous for its supercars that are often manufactured in yellow and black, the Italian car company launched an environmental biomonitoring project in 2016, with the installation of an apiary in the Lamborghini Park at its Sant’Agata Bolognese headquarters.
Over the years, the apiary has grown from a total of eight hives to the current 12, with a population of about 600,000 bees, of which 120,000 are allowed to forage on the premises. The Audi Foundation video cameras, which are positioned inside and outside the hive, allow close-up observation of the insects’ behaviour and provide important data.
By analyzing the hive elements - namely, the honey and wax produced, and the bees themselves - Lamborghini, in collaboration with environmental experts, can detect the presence of environmental pollutants. This prevents pollution from spreading to the environment surrounding Lamborghini’s production plant and the inhabited area of Sant’Agata Bolognese.
Lamborghini’s bee project has recently been enhanced with an experimental biomonitoring study of solitary bee colonies.
The colonies, made up of reed houses located inside Lamborghini Park and near the automotive production site, make it possible to monitor specific areas. This gives a clearer picture of Lamborghini’s overall impact on the environment.
The bee biomonitoring project is part of a broader sustainability strategy pursued by Lamborghini since 2009. The company was recognised as a CO2 neutral company in 2015, which it has maintained despite the recent doubling of its production facilities.
