Two years after their launch, BMW M is refreshing the high-performance models of the Sports Activity Vehicle BMW X3 and the Sports Activity Coupe BMW X4.
In addition to new design features drawn from the updated X3 and X4, the new BMW X3 M Competition and BMW X4 M Competition also offer vastly increased pulling power, peaking at 503bhp and 650Nm of torque.
The standard M sports exhaust system imbues the engine sound with the signature aural characteristics of BMW M automobiles, creating a distinctly sonorous quality, especially when under intense load and at high engine speeds. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via an eight‑speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.
The M xDrive all-wheel drive system also contributes to the agility of the X3 and X4 M Competition. The vehicle's Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) only directs part of the engine's torque to the front axle when the rear wheels reach their limits, ensuring a loss-free transmission of engine power.
The standard adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers ensures day-to-day comfort and unflappable traction, with limited wheel and body movement. Together with the DSC system, the damping forces adjust to every situation on the road by means of electromagnetically controlled valves.
The performance characteristics of the X3 and X4 M Competition are complemented by the high-efficiency standard M brake system. The brake calipers bear the M logo and are finished in either blue, high-gloss black or red. These are housed in 21-inch M forged wheels burnished in Jet Black.
On the outside, both vehicles sport the distinctive enlarged BMW kidney grille. In addition to the standard adaptive LED headl ights with Matrix functionality, BMW Laser Light, which allows for night time vision of up to 650m is available as an optional extra.
One particularly striking feature is the new, vertically arranged and elongated side air intakes - these are angled towards the spoiler lip and merge into the hexagonal shape of the central air intake. They are framed by trim elements in high-gloss black.
At the back, the X3 and X4 M Competition feature large diffusers flanked on the right and left by the M sports exhaust system, which are finished in black chrome. In addition to M Carbon Black metallic and Brooklyn Grey metallic, there are two new paint finishes reserved exclusively for the M Competition models of the X3 and X4 series, namely M Marina Bay Blue metallic and M Sao Paulo Yellow.
Inside, the X3 and X4 M Competition feature M sports seats with electrically adjustable headrests and illuminated M logos as standard. The extended Merino leather upholstery is available in four colour combinations, and the air vents are framed by a new galvanised trim. The M leather steering wheel with multifunction features contrast stitching in BMW M colours.
Both vehicles come equipped with BMW Live Cockpit Professional with Connected Drive as standard. Live Cockpit Professional offers a fully digital display system, with the high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and the Control Display each boasting a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches. A Harman Kardon surround sound system now comes as standard for a stellar audio experience.
Another standard feature is optimised smartphone integration. Android Auto can now be used with the vehicle's BMW Operating System 7, in addition to Apple CarPlay. The driver can view important information on the Control Display and also, in intelligently processed form, on the instrument cluster and the optional Head-Up Display.
The BMW X3 and X4 M Competition come with the modern driver assistance systems found in the base BMW X3 and X4. Driving Assistant Professional is available as an option for the first time, and includes Active Cruise Control, intersection warning, emergency lane assistant, and improved steering guidance.
The optional Parking Assistant Plus uses Park View, Panorama View and 3D Top View to stitch together a 360 degree image of the vehicle, creating a three-dimensional live image of the vehicle and its surroundings. This can be transmitted to owners' smartphones when not in close proximity to the car by means of Remote 3D View.
