Peugeot has unveiled a new 48V hybrid drivetrain for its 3008 and 5008.

The drivetrain consists of a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine, with a total output of 136bhp and 230Nm of torque, paired to a 28bhp permanent magnet synchronous electric motor that produces a peak torque of 55Nm.

The gearbox housing for the new six-speed dual-clutch gearbox also houses the 28bhp electric motor
This electric motor will sit within a new, six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and is fed via a 0.8kWh (0.4kWh gross capacity) lithium-ion battery, which will come with an eight-year/160,000 km warranty.

The electric motor will provide additional torque to the petrol engine at low rpms, while serving as a generator to recharge the 48V battery during deceleration, allowing for the recuperation of energy.

Peugeot states that the new system will see up to a 15% reduction in fuel consumption compared with a non-electric petrol engine with comparable features, while allowing the 3008 and 5008 Hybrid to be driven in electric-only mode up to 50% of the time in urban traffic.

This new 48V hybrid drivetrain will replace the 1.2-litre unit that comes paired with an eight-speed transmission, and is set to also be available on the Peugeot 208, 2008, 308, 308 SW and 408.
