Hyundai has released pictures of just the estate variant so far, with the four-door saloon to follow shortly, and the i40 is aimed at the likes of the Ford Mondeo, Volkswagen Passat and Mazda6 in the European market.
The i40 features Hyundai's 'fluidic sculpture' design language, giving it a similar look to the new Elantra/Avante, with its hexagonal grille flanked by two jewel-like headlamps, accentuated by the flowing roofline and slashes along the sides.
The interior of the i40 features a highly-mounted screen display on the dashboard, supplemented by a pair of air con vents at the side, and a bank of buttons for the controls. Hyundai has also introduced unique technology on the i40, like the heated and reclining front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and an active de-mist system that automatically detects and clears mist on the windscreen.
Hyundai has only revealed details of one engine option so far, which is a 1.7-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel unit. However, it is expected that the i40 will also feature a 1.6-litre petrol engine taken from the Veloster, and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder direct injection powerplant that produces 170bhp.
Allan Rushforth, Senior Vice President and COO of Hyundai Motor Europe, commented, "Offering more for less has always been a fundamental principle at Hyundai, and now we are advancing this with our new brand direction under the 'New Thinking, New Possibilities' slogan. The i40 is a perfect example of how we are offering the best and making it accessible to everyone. From stunning design and specification, to industry-leading technology and aftersales care - the i40 sets itself apart from its competitors."
