McLaren looks at Ferrari for inspiration and aims to release own shooting brake
Ferrari and McLaren are like Manchester United and Liverpool. Both on the race track and on the road they seem to be at each other's neck in almost everything all the time. The British team has followed its Italian rival from Grand Prix racing into building supercars. They collaborated with Mercedes-Benz for the SLR McLaren and currently produce the MP4-12C which was recently launched in Singapore. There is also the upcoming replacement to the McLaren F1, to go head on head with the Enzo successor the F70 (Though we call it the Enzo 2.0).
However impressive McLaren maybe both on track and on the road, one thing Ferrari has that McLaren doesn’t are Grand Tourers - which is about to change. A U.K. magazine has an inside scoop regarding a McLaren MP4-12C based shooting brake, and mentioned the styling will be similar to the Ferrari FF. While the Ferrari can seat four with enough cargo room for a ski holiday, the McLaren is a stretched coupe with adequate cargo space.
Powertrain is expected to be provided by a twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 engine with 592hp and 600Nm of torque. That should propel the shooting brake to a 100km/h in three seconds, before topping out around 330km/h.
It will be a cheaper alternative than the Ferrari, with a targeted price of around £150,000 (S$301,343).
