Good news for JDM and Mazda fans. A replacement for the RX-7 that was discontinued back in 2002 is indeed in the works, confirmed by the firm's sports car chief. The new coupe is scheduled for a 2017 release, 50 years after the company's first Wankel-powered vehicle, the 1967 Cosmo Sport 110S.
The new RX-7 is expected to be powered by a naturally-aspirated rotary powertrain, possibly the 1.6-litre 16X rotary engine that debuted back in 2007.
According to Nobuhiro Yamamoto, the new RX-7 will weigh similar to the Toyobaru twins at around 1300kg and will feature several aluminium body panels during its construction to keep weight down. He ruled out carbon-fibre as it will increase the price of manufacturing and the car. The new RX-7 could be built upon an extended platform that will also underpin the next-gen MX-5. While strictly a coupe, the JDM version could be offered in a 2+2 configuration with small rear seats, probably similar to the Toyobaru twins.
