Handling sticky situations in the wild

Imagine this. You are driving in some remote jungle and your have run out of food supply. You rummage through your storage areas and all you have is a bag with some stuff, among which contain a condom, some chewing gum and an umbrella.
Is it possible to survive? According to Gary Humphrey - one of the two stars of Discovery Channel's Car vs. Wild series - yes, you can.
Gary is a former British Special Forces soldier and together with California-based car fanatic Bill Wu as well as Ruby, their trusty Jeep Wrangler, they will venture to the extremely harsh and vicious terrains of Mexico in the adrenaline-infused series.
Besides serving its primary purpose, the umbrella can be flipped over the other side and it can be used as a net for fishing. Fish love chewing gum too so the gum can be used as bait. Now what about the condom? Well, it can hold a lot of water, which makes it an ideal water container.
These were just some of the little survival tricks up Gary's sleeve, and not forgetting Bill, who also had some off-road tactics.
Together, they shared these tips with a group of off-road fanatics during an exclusive off-road adventure organised by Discovery Channel, in partnership with Jeep - offering a glimpse into the types of situations Gary and Bill faced throughout the course of the show.
As part of the Car vs. Wild promotional campaign, Gary and Bill join a 26-vehicle convoy from our highly urbanised city streets to the jungles of Johor and eventually the wilderness of Batang Kali in Selangor.
The car assigned to us was the Jeep Wrangler Sahara Unlimited. Armed with a longer wheelbase as well as two more doors as compared to the Wrangler, this 4x4 is more than capable of ferrying the whole family for some off-road fun.
Once off the beaten track, that was when the real entertainment started. There were one or two vehicles that got stuck in the squishy stuff, requiring expedition mates to lend a helping tow. But for the Wrangler, it was a walk in the park and the car really felt like it belonged there.
Even without placing it into four-wheel drive, the off-road capability of the Wrangler was impressive via a low overall crawl ratio of its five-speed automatic transmission.
When faced with more challenging situations, simply hit the 4x4 shifter into low gear and allow the car to work its magic. Travelling on any slippery surface, sandy area, steep hills or rocks would just be a breeze.
With the Jeep Wrangler, you can literally go anywhere. It is truly a thrill-hungry 4x4 icon with an impressive off-road resume, cementing its status as a trusted survival vehicle and adrenaline junkie that is worthy of its marque.
