As the Official Safety Car for this year's Charity Bike 'n' Blade, Skoda continues to pledge its dedication to cycling and support for the community.

The Tour de France is a gruelling 3,480km race conducted over 21 stages and 23 days, and is one of the three cycling Grand Tours held every year. This year's race is the 106th edition, with 176 riders vying for the coveted yellow jersey.

Skoda has a strong relationship with cycling events, including the Tour de France
The Tour de France has probably made the most headlines for doping allegations, none more famous than Lance Armstrong. And yet, focusing solely on doping (not uncommon in all manner of sporting endeavours) is overlooking the fundamental demands and challenges that the race (and any sport) represents - dedication, resilience, determination and rabid enthusiasm.

Skoda has a long-standing 15-year partnership with the Tour de France, emphasising the brand's close connection to cycling. After all, the genesis of the brand was founded in building bicycles and motorcycles, before eventually producing cars. The brand announced this year that it is furthering its commitment to the Tour de France, and will serve as the official main partner and vehicle partner until 2023.

Skoda's passion and dedication to cycling can also be witnessed closer to home. Skoda Singapore will be supporting a local cycling event, Charity Bike 'n' Blade, taking place from 6-9 September, serving as the Official Safety Car. This marks the second year of the brand's support for Charity Bike 'n' Blade.

Skoda cars proved to be reliable, responsive and safe during past similar events
This year, the cyclists will head up to the northern part of Malaysia (Ipoh and Cameron Highlands) for climbs to raise funds for The Salvation Army Peacehaven Nursing Home.

Of course, one key aspect of being the Official Safety Car is to protect and support the cyclists on their journey. As a volunteer driver from last year's event recounts, the spaciousness of the cars is crucial. "The Skoda fleet of vehicles leaves more than enough room for several passengers (volunteers/first aider, riders, etc.) and their bikes (on the roof racks). The boot space provided enormous storage capacity for equipment (bicycle pumps, road signs, etc.) and replenishments (food, drinks, etc.)," he says.

Additionally, the cars also need to be responsive on-demand, important when tackling rolling terrain and during hill climbs. The volunteers found the Skoda vehicles to be highly responsive throughout the three-day event, important when providing safety in critical traffic conditions. The cars' confident handling also proved important when negotiating windy B-roads.

Roof racks and lockable bike carriers on the Skoda car are some of the cyclist-friendly features
Reliability is also an important factor. Some cyclists may break down, but the Safety Car certainly must not. Throughout last year's close to 600km journey, all the Skoda cars proved to be faultless.

Finally, several unique aspects about Skoda cars that really appeal to the cyclists are the cyclist-friendly features. The roof racks and lockable bike carriers were very useful and productive when picking up cyclists who were not be able to complete the distance or who got injured and couldn't continue to cycle. Also, assistance technologies like blind spot detection and area view help make the road safer for cyclists.

The Skoda brand has been synonymous with the Tour de France, the world's most famous cycling event, and the larger cycling community. The brand's dedication to the sport and its support for the 2019 edition of Charity Bike 'n' Blade highlights the brand's continued passion for cycling.
