After the higher toll rates kicked in yesterday, traffic volume on the Causeway remained high during the morning peak hours, but eased off slightly in the evening.
The Straits Times reported that commuters have no choice but to take this route to school or work, even though the toll charges are now more than five times of that prior to the hike.
Businesses across the Causeway also observed a dip in visitors after the new toll rates came into effect. For instance, the Shell station located just after the Causeway saw fuel sales drop by 20 percent compared to previous weekdays.
Singapore has matched its toll rates to Malaysia's at midnight yesterday. Cars heading towards Johor now have to pay $3.80, up from $1.20 previously. Cars also have to pay $2.70 to enter Singapore, while it was free previously.
